S.S. Success: a New Mentoring and Tutoring Program Sets Sail at Ogemaw Heights High School

A new mentoring and tutoring program is just getting started at Ogemaw Heights High School (in the West Branch - Rose City Area School District).

West Branch, MI, November 01, 2007 --(PR.com)-- New Mentoring and Tutoring Program Sets Sail at OHHS.

S.S. Success is the name of a new program just starting up at Ogemaw Heights High School. The program is aimed at getting community members more involved in the lives of local teenagers through mentoring, tutoring, and fun activities. The coordinator of the program, Katrina McCauley, is excited about serving as an Americorps volunteer and getting this program to set sail. More than 35,000 children currently benefit from structured mentoring relationships in Michigan (Kahle Research Solutions, 2007). Yet, until now, there were no mentoring agencies in Ogemaw County. S.S. Success has the potential to impact the lives of many teenagers.

S.S. Success has four components: Study Sanctuary, Someone Special, Social Sessions, and Spectacular Scenery. The study sanctuary is a classroom at OHHS where students can come during study hall (9:19-10:15am), lunches (10:24am-12:39pm), and after school (2:30-3:30pm) to get help with homework. Someone special is the part of the program where adult community members (mentors) will be matched up with OHHS teens (mentees) in one-on-one mentoring relationships. Social sessions are weekly activities that mentors and mentees can participate in together as they get to know one another. They will take place every Thursday from 2:45-3:45pm at OHHS. Spectacular scenery refers to a monthly, out of school event for mentors and mentees. Events may include community service projects, day trips, etc. Students and volunteers can choose to participate in any or all components of the S.S. Success program.

Since S.S. Success is just getting started, it has several needs: mentors, tutors, volunteers to plan or supervise activities, referrals for potential mentees, furniture and decorations for the sanctuary, snacks, financial support, etc. For more information, to volunteer, or to get an OHHS teen involved, please contact Katrina at mccaulek@mail.wbrc.k12.mi.us.
