Safe Ride to School Seeks Funds for Endangered Afghan Students

GreaterGood.org's progressive program provides school bus for girls attending school in Afghanistan.

Seattle, WA, July 01, 2014 --(PR.com)-- While attending school is oftentimes a dreaded chore for children, for girls living in Afghanistan, it is a coveted opportunity that often puts them in incredible danger.

In 2008, two members of the Taliban attacked a group of young girls as they walked to school, seriously injuring them. Since then, Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Dexter Filkins and an Afghan colleague, in partnership with GreaterGood.org, have worked to ensure the safety of girls attending Mirwais Mena School for Girls in Afghanistan by providing them with a school bus and driver through the Safe Ride to School program.

Now, almost five years later, the bus is in need of serious repair. Without this bus, these girls will be left to fend for themselves and many will be forced to drop out of school, which is why GreaterGood has launched a campaign to raise money for two additional school buses.

“Mirwais Mena is a far-flung village, and the bus allowed the girls to travel to school safely, giving their parents some peace of mind,” says Filkins. “GreaterGood adopted the charity last year, and the organization has been wonderful. The bus is still going, but it’s old and in need of repairs. With your help, we will get another. Let’s keep the girls at the Mirwais Mena School safely in class, where they belong.”

One hundred percent of donations will go to the Safe Ride to School program and can be made online.

"Education is like a light; you can see the path you are going on in the dark. If you don't have an education, you are blind, and you will not see things clearly,” said Sadia, an 11th grade student at Mirwais Mena. “The bus project is extraordinary. It helps to take girls safely to school and get them back home safely.”

About Safe Ride to School
Mirwais Mena School for Girls is located in a village by the same name just outside of Kandahar, in southern Afghanistan. It is the only school for more than five hundred Afghan girls. Most of the girls’ parents are illiterate, and many of the girls have to travel several miles from surrounding villages to get to class. Through the Safe Ride to School program, GreaterGood.org and The Literacy Site ensure the students of the Mirwais Mena School for Girls are able to travel safely to and from their classrooms.
