Sounds “From The Rabbit Hole” Found “Behind The Red Door” October 21st and 22nd
“From The Rabbit Hole” Reflects The Diverse Sounds of NY’s Underground With 22 Mixed-Genre Singles by Rising, indie, NY Artists on Vinyl & Digital
New York, NY, October 19, 2014 --(PR.com)-- For most, New York incites visuals of bright lights, endless opportunities, colorful neighbourhoods and, of course, edgy and varied arts. Enter BHi Music Group, an independent record label founded by Christian Cedras and Krista Retto in conjunction with music industry veteran, Dick Wingate, with their first release, “From The Rabbit Hole.” About to unleash ‘the rabbits’ in a two-day, 16-act showcase at Red Door during CMJ week (October 21 and 22), the showcase will move from electronic to pop to rock to hip-hop, co-mingling the fans and industry-goers that is reflective of New York, its sounds, and its artists.
Firstly, “From The Rabbit Hole” is an extension of the company’s diverse makeup, whose nine-person staff speaks seven languages, with heritages from 19 countries, between them. Its featured artists run an even bigger gamut. From 18-50 years old; privileged to struggling; gay and straight; seasoned musicians to those just diving into a music career, the acts are not just sonically-diverse. BHi Music Group’s co-founder, Krista Retto, says, “The compilation reflects most peoples’ iPods today, where we listen to Arctic Monkeys’ newest release, then a Red Hot Chili Peppers song, then an old-school Eminem track, to maybe a David Bowie or Rolling Stones track, back to some TV On The Radio. The difference for us New Yorkers is that we live this mélange in our every day lives too – in the faces of people, in the smells from the street carts, in our co-workers and in our homes. From rock drummer Helen Destroy who is gay, to the recently-turned 19 year old Ben Alessi electronic pop, to vibey Balancer’s Chilean members, the compilation is replete with ‘diverse.’ It’s beautiful.”
“From The Rabbit Hole” was initially born when the in-house A&R team listened to and went to see perform more than 1,000 NY bands over the course of about a year trying to find two or three acts with which they would launch their label. Though everyone ‘knows’ New York draws diversity, the sonic scope even surprised the label; the young label found a breadth of talent that, being so young, they couldn’t possibly represent, but felt the acts on the double-LP were exceptional enough to deserve some spotlight while showing how wide the genre-span is here.
BHi Music Group, with Caroline/Universal as its distributor partner, just released “From The Rabbit Hole” digitally worldwide, with a vinyl double-LP releasing on October 28th, 2014. To further the exposure, BHi Music Group is hosting a two-day showcase of 16 representative acts from the compilation at Giorgio Gomelsky’s legendary Red Door venue (which started as Green Door). It’s a tribute to the artists and New York’s rising sounds, but also to Gomelsky, who is now 80 years old and closing his participation in the venue. There are hopes the venue can continue as an artist collaborative, but as it stands, Red Door is closing due to real estate development. Many famous musical career lives who were given their first chance by Gomelsky are expected to attend, bolstering the mission of the showcase, while adding some glitz, glam and flare to the flicker of bright light coming from the emerging acts.
