Family-Friendly Raleigh LUNGe Forward 5K Raises Funds for Research, Education & Awareness for Lung Cancer

Raleigh, NC, October 25, 2014 --(PR.com)-- The Raleigh LUNGe Forward 5K Run, Walk & Rally will take place on Saturday, November 1 at North Hills Midtown Park and is presented by Duke Raleigh Cancer Center. This will be the 8th year this race has been held, forwarding the goal of providing a network of hope and action for all those affected by this disease.

Only 16 percent of individuals diagnosed with lung cancer survive five years; the Lung Cancer Initiative of North Carolina strives to change that. Lung cancer claims more than 160,000 lives in the United States every year, more than any other cancer and more than breast, colon and prostate cancers combined. The five-year lung cancer survival rate has barely budged in the past decade, inching up from 15 percent to 16 percent. The efforts of the Lung Cancer Initiative aim to change these dismal statistics.

“This will be an event of hope and strength for those fighting, as well as in remembrance for those we have lost. By participating in the LUNGe Forward 5K, we will make a direct difference to those fighting the battle against lung cancer across North Carolina. We encourage everyone in the Triangle area to join this movement, helping to bring the attention and funding to lung cancer that it desperately needs,” says Heather Hooper, Executive Director of the Lung Cancer Initiative of North Carolina.

“It is very gratifying to see how our event has grown over the past eight years. I believe this is a beautiful reflection of our gains for people with lung cancer in terms of advocacy, education, access, and research,” said Dr. Jennifer Garst, Professor of Medicine and thoracic oncologist for the Duke Cancer Institute at Duke Raleigh Cancer Center. “I always leave this event feeling uplifted and filled with hope for the future.”

Onsite registration will begin at 8:30 AM on event day, including an onstage rally, music, kid’s activities and exhibits, followed by a 1mile walk lead by lung cancer survivors at 9:30 AM and the beginning of the 5K at 10:00 AM. In addition to the race, food and family-friendly entertainment will also be provided. The cost is $25 for adults in advance or $30 on event day and $15 for children in advance or $20 on event day.
