William Peace University Student Earns Highest Honor from Girl Scouts of America for Diabetes Care Boxes Project

Freshman Ashley Johnson from Four-Year Baccalaureate University Awarded Girl Scout Gold Award

Raleigh, NC, October 29, 2014 --(PR.com)-- William Peace University, (http://www.peace.edu/) a private four-year university located in downtown Raleigh, is proud to announce that Ashley Johnson, '18, has received the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest achievement in Girl Scouting which recognizes young women who demonstrate extraordinary leadership through sustainable and measurable Take Action projects. Johnson created 150 diabetic care boxes for children newly diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes and were admitted to Vidant Health Medical Center.

Within the boxes, Johnson included an informational CD and pamphlet about high and low blood sugar, a gel bracelet, a food log notebook, and various snacks for emergency use to raise blood sugar. She also created a YouTube video to show others that her project could be replicated in their communities. Ashley said she was inspired to create the boxes because of her personal history with Type 1 Diabetes.

“From first-hand experience I knew what it was like to be extremely ill and spend time in ICU," Johnson said. "There are so many things to learn about this new lifestyle and so many changes to make once you leave the hospital."

“Through her project, Ashley has demonstrated she possesses the proven qualities of a community leader and the Girl Scout Gold Award designation is truly a remarkable achievement,” said Lisa Jones, chief executive officer of Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines. “She recognized a need in her community and took action to create a sustainable response. She turned her own experience with Type 1 Diabetes into a positive experience that has touched the lives of hundreds of children in her community who are learning about their diagnosis.”

"We are so proud of Ashley and her accomplishments outside of the classroom," said Debra M. Townsley, Ph.D., President of William Peace University. "She, and all of our other great students, is the perfect example of a well-rounded person and citizen."

Ashley joined Girl Scouts in 2001. She is currently a first-year student at WPU studying Business Administration. Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines contributed to this news release.

About William Peace University:

William Peace University is located in the heart of downtown Raleigh, North Carolina. It was founded in 1857 as Peace Institute, offering education for boys and girls in primary grades and to women from high school to college. Peace, an all-women's college, became a four-year baccalaureate college and graduated its first bachelor's students in August of 1996. Exclusively an all-women's institution for its first 152 years, Peace began offering coeducational evening courses through the William Peace School of Professional Studies in 2009. In 2011, Peace College transitioned to William Peace University and welcomed its first coeducational class to its day program in fall 2012. Its mission is to prepare students for careers in the organizations of tomorrow. On average, more than 90 percent of the university's graduates are placed in jobs or graduate school within one year of graduation. In fact, the University is ranked No. 1 in the nation among colleges with the highest rate of internships, according to a 2013 study conducted by U.S. News & World Report.
