Benefit For Darfur organization and Lilly Pulitzer
Palm Beach, FL, November 03, 2007 --(PR.com)-- Lilly Pulitzer Via Palm Beach will present “Brighter Days for Darfur” in association with For Darfur, Inc. on Thursday, November 15, 2007 at the Brazilian Court in Palm Beach, Florida. This cocktail reception will be held from 6– 9 p.m.
The evening’s festivities include a complimentary cocktail reception with h'orderves from the famed Café Boulard, a silent auction to include a wide variety of unique items, live music featuring a top flamenco guitarist and informal fashions by Lilly Pulitzer courtesy of C. Orrico. Tickets are $150.00. A limited number of tickets are being sold. For more information call 561-274-6760.
Co-Chairing the event are Gabriel Schillinger and George Merck of For Darfur, Inc., a non-profit that they formed themselves with another five High School students with the goal of raising awareness and funds for children and elderly who are suffering in Darfur. Funds raised at the Brighter Days for Darfur event will directly support relief efforts through Doctors Without Borders.
“Working in conjunction with Lilly Pulitzer Via Palm Beach, this benefit is a great opportunity for people to support the cause,” said George Merck, Co-founder of For Darfur. “We have been working on awareness raising events, but in the end money is needed to help put medicine and food in the places it can do the most good.”
People might look at us as just a bunch of high school kids but we are young people with a dream and we’re willing to work for it,” said Gabriel Schillinger Co-founder of For Darfur. “We created For Darfur on the basis students can have a say and provide the support to make things happen. We’re really focused on seeing that we help the children who need help in Darfur. The response has been amazing, we have a teen-run board of directors and over 20 associate members.”
Brighter Days Event Host Committee Members include Susan and Peter Brockway, Jane and Jimmy Buffet, Adele and George Merck, Melissa and Howard Parker, Lilly Rousseau, Mary Lou Schillinger and Dr. Brent Schillinger, and Christy and Mark Sunshine.
Brighter Days event sponsors include Lilly Pulitzer Via Palm Beach, First Capital Bank, and C. Orrico.
Giving up evenings, weekends and summer vacations, these teens are working feverishly to raise awareness and funding for the grave suffering in the Darfur region of Sudan. The group has even attracted the involvement of Jack Healey, the former President of Amnesty International, who now sits on their Advisory Board. Healey is respected around the world, and has been instrumental in raising awareness in the current situation in Burma.
Back in June 2007, the organization staged “Jammin' For Darfur” a concert and multi-media event at Old School Square to recruit teen involvement to the cause. The band “New School Dropouts” came down and played the benefit. It was the non-profit’s first concert event, and it actually generated considerable revenues for Doctors Without Borders. “To have a financial success with our very first concert ever is extremely encouraging,” said Grant Dubler, the Chief Financial Officer for the non-profit.
For Darfur’s next concert involvement is with Africa’s best known artist, the legendary Youssou N’Dour. N’Dour was recently named by TIME Magazine as “Top 100 Most Influential People in The World”. N’Dour has often been called the new voice of Africa for the 21st Century. The concert is scheduled for November 16th at Gusman Hall, Miami and is being promoted by The Rhythm Foundation.
