Minnesota Sinfonia Offers Free Holiday Concert in Minneapolis and St. Paul
The Minnesota Sinfonia presents Happy Holidays, a program of seasonal favorites at First Covenant Church in St. Paul on Friday, Dec. 12 at 7 p.m. and the Basilica of St. Mary in Minneapolis on Saturday, Dec. 13 at 2 p.m.
Minneapolis, MN, November 01, 2014 --(PR.com)-- The Minnesota Sinfonia presents Happy Holidays, a program of seasonal favorites at First Covenant Church in St. Paul on Friday, Dec. 12 at 7 p.m. and the Basilica of St. Mary in Minneapolis on Saturday, Dec. 13 at 2 p.m. Performances are free admission and children are welcome. The Minnesota Sinfonia is a non-profit, professional orchestra dedicated to serving the musical needs of Minnesotans, especially children, seniors and those with limited financial means.
The Sinfonia’s holiday performance will also feature solo performances by Naomi Powers, violin, and Mariya Zabara, cello, the winners of the 2014 Young Artist String Competition, the Sinfonia’s premier competition open to string musicians up to age 19 living in Minn., Wis., Iowa, N.D. and S.D.
Powers, 15, won the Junior Division of the Sinfonia’s 2014 Competition. She is a Mitchell, S.D. native who began playing violin at the age of four with Suzuki method instructor Jay Reeve. She currently studies with Doosook Kim, concertmaster of the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra. Powers has been a member of the South Dakota Symphony Youth Orchestra for five years, placed in multiple competitions and studied at the Foulger International Music Festival.
Zabara, 17, is the winner of the Senior Division for the 2014 Competition and the Claire Givens Violins first place cash prize. She began playing cello at the age of six at the Republic Music College in Minsk, Belarus. Zabara has participated in a variety of concerts with Belarusian chamber orchestras, placed in several competitions and participated in master classes with cellists Aleksey Seleznev and Jerome Pernoo. She currently attends Shattuck St. Mary’s School in Faribault, Minn. and studies with University of Minnesota professor Tanya Remenikova.
