East West Math LLC is Offering New Singapore Math® Seminars in New Jersey in the Fall 2014
Chatham, NJ, November 07, 2014 --(PR.com)-- Recently, the Singapore Math® program became one of the most popular K-5 mathematics programs for schools in New Jersey. Over two dozen of the high profile public as well as the elite private schools in New Jersey adopted either the authentic Primary Mathematics or an Americanized version of the Singapore Math curricula. And the trend for adopting Singapore Math programs in schools is steadily growing in New Jersey.
The Singapore Math seminars will help teachers who are new to the program or who are already using Singapore Math to better understand the mathematical content knowledge, which lays the foundation for the program sequence and unit progressions from the Kindergarten to fifth grades.
The seminars are designed to show the Singapore Math strategies and to explain their relationship to the Common Core State Standards in New Jersey for both mathematical content and for mathematical practices in K-5.
The Singapore Math pedagogy will be explained with examples that will illustrate the concrete to pictorial to abstract sequence. These examples will show the sequence that starts with hands on activities, which leads to pictorial representations in the textbooks that will, in turn, culminate with the abstract problem solving.
The workshops are designed to be interactive and they are conducted in a small group setting. Teachers will see and experience the mini-lessons with hands-on activities and solving problems with the Singapore Math visual models.
Teachers who are new to the Singapore Math program can attend their highly popular Number Sense and Intro to Model Drawing workshops. These workshops will help teachers to understand and to experience the Singapore Math teaching and learning practices. Specific examples from the textbooks with the use of the manipulatives will illustrate how to execute any type of a Singapore Math lesson.
The Number Sense workshop will focus on teaching cardinality of a number, composition and decomposition of numbers, “making and breaking 10,” structure of numbers, mental math, addition and subtraction strategies with and without re-grouping, and others.
Teachers who are new to the program or who would like to incorporate some the Singapore Math strategies into their existing math programs can attend workshops on Bar Modeling. These workshops will help teachers to break down even the most complicated problems and, then, solve them step-by-step with model drawing. Teachers will also benefit from learning and practicing these engaging strategies for developing strong problem solving abilities with a variety of the model drawing techniques.
Suggested audience: K-5 teachers, special education teachers, administrators and math specialists.
During the seminars attendees will have a chance to preview the newly released Singapore Math® Primary Mathematics Common Core edition textbooks, workbooks and teachers’ guides. The new Singapore Math materials maintain the same integrity, rigor and focus of the original materials. However, the new edition also covers the entire scope and sequence of the Common Core State Standards in New Jersey for content and for mathematical practices. The new edition is also very helpful for teaching mathematics to English Language Learners (ELLs).
East West Math LLC specializes in the Singapore Math® and Lesson Study professional development services. East West Math LLC ‘s team of experts provides a high quality professional development in Primary Mathematics, Math in Focus, Japanese mathematics and the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics to many schools and districts in the tri-state area and across the United States.
