Food Bank of South Jersey Launches Hope Mobile Pantry for Veterans
Pennsauken, NJ, November 10, 2014 --(PR.com)-- Veterans in need of a helping hand will soon have it consistently from the Food Bank of South Jersey (FBSJ). The largest source of emergency food assistance in South Jersey, FBSJ is adding the Army National Guard Armory in Cherry Hill, NJ to the list of sites that it will service regularly with its Hope Mobile – an 18-wheel tractor trailer that functions as a massive pantry.
FBSJ’s Hope Mobile program for veterans will kick off in January 2015. Approximately 100 veterans and their families are expected to receive assistance, which will include a mix of dry, refrigerated, and frozen foods as well as fresh produce. It was made possible by a grant awarded to FBSJ by the Disabled American Veterans Charitable Service Trust.
The addition of the Hope Mobile expands FBSJ’s efforts to assist veterans in South Jersey. In partnership with Volunteers of America’s Home of the Brave – a homeless/transitional shelter for veterans in Camden – FBSJ has been teaching veterans through its Healthy Living Initiative to cook meals that are nutritious and simple to prepare, using food items typically distributed through charitable feeding partners.
100,000 Veterans in Four SJ Counties
A survey conducted recently by FBSJ of its partner agencies revealed that 6% of households have a member currently serving in the military, with 18% indicating past military service. Nearly 100,000 veterans reside in the four counties (Camden, Gloucester, Salem, and Burlington) serviced by FBSJ, with many challenged by the adjustment to civilian life.
“Our mission is to provide food and services to those most vulnerable to hunger,” said FBSJ CEO Val Traore. “It is particularly gratifying for us to be able to give back to those who have already served us.”
FBSJ services nine sites on a monthly basis through its Hope Mobile program. Most recently, it added sites in Pennsauken and Gloucester City. More information on The Hope Mobile can be found at http://www.foodbanksj.org/HopeMobile.html.
