Basalt, CO, November 15, 2014 --(PR.com)-- Custom Builders of Aspen has most recently completed its most spectacular Aspen custom home building a Timber Construction Home to in the Five Trees neighborhood of Aspen Highlands.

Custom Builders of Aspen has most recently completed its most spectacular home to date. The 9000 square foot residence is built of Vertical Grain Douglas Fir Timber Frame Construction. The timbers were personally picked by the builder, Karl K. Schindler, owner of Custom Builders of Aspen on Vancouver Island, B.C., Canada. The Architect for the project was Tommy Hein Architects located in Telluride, Colorado. The residence was designed and built around a Sustainable Guideline. These principles have a wide range of applications but their objectives are simple, to reduce the use of non-renewable resources and minimize environmental impact. The design calls for large 12X12 vertically placed Fir Timbers to support a series of 12X36 Beams horizontally across the expanse of the residence. Then on 24” centers 12X24 Fir Timbers are layed out to support the roof.

All the Timbers throughout the residence are FSC Certified, standing dead, vertical grain Douglas fir. FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) is an international certification and labeling system dedicated to promoting responsible forest management of the worlds forests. FSC enables businesses and consumers to make informed choices about the forest products (timbers), and create positive change to keep our forests healthy for generations to come. Custom Builders of Aspen recognizes that they are only one part of a collaborative process, and has responded to these important challenges with a common sense approach that maximizes both economic and environmental performance. At the time of Permit Application, the City of Aspen required its builders to complete an Efficient Building Program (APEB) checklist. The program was designed to educate the public and the building trades about utilizing resources more efficiently. The program addresses the reduction of construction waste, promoting recycled and renewable resources, energy efficiency, indoor air quality, renewable energy, water conservation, as well as efficient building techniques. The program was point based. The number of points required is based on the size and type of the project.

The windows for the residence were custom made vertical grain Douglas Fir wood windows fabricated by the Dynamic Window Company in Abbotsford, B.C. Canada. The wood is all FSC Certified, again minimizing the environmental impact. The glass is a high performance Softcoat Low Emissivity (Low E) glass to achieve a lower U-factor (heat loss/gain) or Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) The glass is sprayed with a coating of metal oxide particles that produce a higher heat reflectance. The sealed units are then filled with argon to further increase insulating value. The exterior walls are all insulated with BIBS.

One of the underlying features of this home are all the timber connections throughout the residence. The base brackets and the connection brackets are all hand mortised into the timbers. The brackets were all fabricated by a local Blacksmith from the Roaring fork valley. The Valley boasts a large contingent of resident blacksmiths that have all been mentored by the infamous Francis Whitaker, making the finished product even more special. Each bracket was detailed by Tommy Hein, and with the help of Karl Schindler were submitted to the Blacksmith for fabrication. Even the nuts and bolts for the brackets were patina the same finish. To add to the underlying steel details, the same Blacksmith was contracted to fabricate all the handrails throughout.

Cabinetry for the home was locally hand fabricated out of rift cut Douglas Fir, again with locally hand forged hardware. Since the residence is ski in and ski out, a ski locker room is located on the lower level. The lockers all milled with same rift cut Douglas Fir. There is a basketball court, a spa with steam shower, and a Cork floor Massage room.

One of the contrasts to the interior design is a Hand Hewed Reclaimed Walnut floor installed throughout the Main Floor. The wood was reclaimed from a barn purchased in Kentucky, resawed and milled in Oregon, kiln dried in Washington and shipped to aspen, where is sat on site for three months to acclimate further before being installed.

Many other features of this Aspen custom home project set the home apart from all others, too numerous to describe. However, the final touch to the home was the Lighting design provided by Robert Singer and Associates, located in basalt, Colorado. A local, internationally renowned lighting designer, which provided a very detailed lighting design which highlighted every special feature of this home.

The end result was the Most Spectacular Residence built by this Aspen construction company to date. Not only was the home a success but the Project ended with very satisfied clients to boot.
