Characterized by a scaling, flaking red skin eruption- people with psoriasis may be embarrassed by their condition and discriminated against by others. Although it is not contagious and does not limit life expectancy, psoriasis is associated with increased heart disease risk and those with associated joint pains, known as psoriatic arthritis, can be quite debilitated. The National Psoriasis Foundation is a non-profit resource for patients, providers, insurers and others to educate and support the efforts of those with psoriasis.
