EdTech Startup Hits 500,000 Active Students & Pushes the Bounds of Front End Design
Toronto, Canada, December 10, 2014 --(PR.com)-- Today, Top Hat has launched a completely novel style website that is unprecedented. While it may seem simple, the challenges were fierce in creating a hand-illustrated animated homepage, built on Wordpress nonetheless. After setting out to redesign a homepage that was completely unique from their competitors, Top Hat ended up with a complete brand redesign and a website that is unparalleled.
Of the company’s recent announcement, lead designer, Andrew Corway, says that, “A lot of websites follow the same formula of big image, people using devices, logo, tag-line, and big sign up button. It works, but it also means a lot of websites look the same. No one is education is doing illustration.
“We took a risk going with an illustrated brand to differentiate ourselves. While it was challenging, sometimes you need to do things simply because they are hard. We think that this launch raises the bar and shows what’s possible beyond a simple stock photo or stock video home page.”
The path to get to this innovative decision was not a straight or simple one, according to Alyssa Atkins, Top Hat's Content Manager.
The decision to take the risk and go with an animated illustration, built on Wordpress making it even more challenging, was not an easy one to arrive at. They needed something that stood out from others in the space and could be self-serve for the marketing team (hence the decision to build on Wordpress).
Once they finally came to the decision to use illustration, they then needed to ensure they created an illustration that still conveyed maturity and simplicity.
