Raleigh, NC, December 11, 2014 --(PR.com)-- McKim & Creed, Inc., an engineering, surveying and planning firm with offices throughout the South, has received two Grand Engineering Excellence Awards from the American Council of Engineering Companies of North Carolina (ACEC/NC).
The awards were presented November 13 at ACEC/NC’s awards gala in Raleigh, North Carolina. The engineering excellence awards program is an annual competition that honors and recognizes engineering and surveying firms for projects that demonstrate the highest degree of achievement, value and ingenuity.
In the surveying and mapping category of the awards program, McKim & Creed and its client, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District were honored for a beach profile and groin survey along four miles of New Jersey beach that was devastated by Hurricane Sandy in October 2012. McKim & Creed mapped 145 beach profiles and performed detailed topographic surveys above and below the water surface for 29 stone groins and revetments, using a combination of conventional, hydrographic and airborne LiDAR techniques. This project supports the repair and restoration of the largest beachfill project ever, by volume, and helps the New York District return the beaches to their pre-storm condition and restore them to their full, original design level of protection. This, in turn, provides more sand to the affected areas and makes these communities less vulnerable to future storm events.
In the building/technology category, McKim & Creed and Fayetteville State University received a Grand Award for the university’s 60,000-square-foot, $20 million facility Science and Technology building. McKim & Creed provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection services for the LEED® Silver-targeted facility, which showcases the university’s energy, climate and sustainability goals. McKim & Creed designed systems that reduce energy consumption by 30% below ASHRAE 90.1-2004 standards and that cut indoor water use by 20% and outdoor water consumption by 50% below NC Building Code requirements. A dashboard monitoring system is in place and is capable of providing real-time energy/water consumption information.
McKim & Creed is an employee-owned engineering, surveying and planning firm with more than 350 staff members in offices throughout the South, including North Carolina, Florida, Virginia, Georgia and Texas. The company offers civil, environmental, structural, mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering services, as well as airborne and mobile LiDAR, subsurface utility engineering, and hydrographic and conventional surveying services for the municipal, energy, development and institutional markets.
