SATURDAY to Premiere at 2015 Sundance Film Festival, Presented by Red Touch Media in Partnership with Really Epic Dog
A Magnified Pictures Kickstarter Campaign Supported by Wayne Scholes Brings to Life Short Film About 1989 Hillsborough Stadium Disaster.
Salt Lake City, UT, December 12, 2014 --(PR.com)-- Red Touch Media, the technology company behind the fastest-growing digital media content management platform in the entertainment industry, has announced that SATURDAY, a short film offered in partnership with Really Epic Dog, will premiere at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. A program of the Sundance Institute, the Festival is one of the largest showcases of work from international independent filmmakers. The 2015 Festival will run from Thursday, Jan. 22 to Sunday, Feb. 1 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden and Sundance, Utah. SATURDAY, produced by Magnified Pictures Ltd., was one of only 60 short films selected to qualify for public viewing from more than 8,000 submissions.
The film, written and directed by Mike Forshaw, is a fictional account of how the Hillsborough stadium disaster unfolded for one family living in Merseyside, England. The tragedy that occurred on the terraces of the Hillsborough stadium on April 15, 1989 in Sheffield, England, claimed the lives of 96 Liverpool FC supporters there to attend the FA Cup Semi-Finals football match. Recognized as the biggest sporting disaster in British history, the film provides a unique, emotional perspective through the eyes of an 8-year-old child, played by actor Harrison Vaughan.
Born and raised in Liverpool, Forshaw drew inspiration to create the film from his own childhood memory of the disaster. SATURDAY received a top prize in 2013 during Nisi Masa’s European Script Pitch contest, creating a great deal of interest around the project. Forshaw and the films producer, Jessica Levick from Magnified Pictures, then launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds and generate buzz about the film. Thanks to the outpouring of support from a total of 414 backers from around the world, the campaign surpassed its £24,000 goal, allowing the film to be financed in full.
One major contributor to the campaign, Wayne Scholes, CEO of Red Touch Media and Director of Really Epic Dog, is an avid Liverpool FC fan and longtime supporter of the survivors, their families and the campaign for justice for the 96 fans killed at Hillsborough. His support for SATURDAY extended beyond finances to include providing the global resources and expertise of his staff to help promote and distribute the film. Red Touch Media will distribute the film through various platforms, including set-top box apps, mobile apps, web application stores and retail kiosks, as part of this effort. In addition, Magnified Pictures will seek representation for cinema screenings in the United Kingdom and television and digital rights worldwide, in an effort to expose the film to the widest possible audiences.
Quotes:
“Along with many people, the tragedy at Hillsborough has had a lasting effect on my life. So I was eager to support Mike’s mission to bring a fresh perspective to the tragic events of that day in any way that I could,” said Scholes. “I am so proud of what Mike and Jessica have accomplished with this masterful short film and cannot wait to see it premiere at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival.”
“SATURDAY went from being the film that almost never happened to a film now set to premiere at Sundance Film Festival – it’s beyond my wildest dreams. I cannot thank Jessica, Wayne and the countless other supporters of the Kickstarter campaign enough for helping make this project possible,” said Forshaw. “My childhood memories of the Hillsborough disaster have profoundly impacted the inspiration and creation of this film, and I am excited to share this fictional account of the disaster with such an esteemed group of film lovers. The heart of the film focuses on an ordinary family coping with a situation beyond their control, which I believe will deeply resonate with many viewers.”
