WTI Supports Keller Peak and Butler Peak Fire Lookouts
Irvine, CA, December 17, 2014 --(PR.com)-- In appreciation of many years of community service and valuable conservation efforts, WTI has renewed its commitment of financial support for the Keller Peak Fire Lookout and Butler Peak Fire Lookout through the National Forest Association’s Adopt-A-Lookout Program. WTI’s donation helps to support the Association’s Fire Lookout Host program, which maintains seven historic fire towers across the San Bernardino National Forest and ensures that these historic fire lookout stations are well staffed, in good repair and able to continue their efforts to spot fires and educate visitors.
The donation provided by WTI will allow for annual maintenance and repairs to the towers, helping to keep them safe and open to the public. Fire Lookout volunteers help to protect forest resources and local mountain communities, as well as urban communities along the forest boundary, from the threat of fire. In the past year lookout volunteers have logged more than 15,000 hours, hosted over 13,000 visitors and called in dozens of smoke sightings and reported hundreds of lightning strikes within the National Forrest.
Standing at an elevation of 7,882 feet, the Keller Peak Lookout was built in 1926 and is the oldest remaining original fire tower in the San Bernardino National Forest. Located at a remote site three miles east of Running Springs, the Keller Peak Lookout is also a brief walk from the spot where a B-26 bomber crashed in 1941; some of the wreckage of the bomber is still visible. The Butler Peak Lookout at 8,535 feet above sea level is located between the towns of Green Valley Lake and Fawnskin. From Memorial Day through the late fall season these Lookouts welcome visitors to enjoy the majestic views from the top of the towers and learn about the mountains and historic firefighting procedures.
