WNSC Science Students Inspired to Explore the Galaxy
Oswestry, United Kingdom, December 18, 2014 --(PR.com)-- Just last week, A Level students had the opportunity to meet the Canadian Astronaut (and musician), Commander Chris Hadfield, a local independent bookshop, Booka, had arranged for him to come to Oswestry and Physics Lecturer, Rupert Boyle, was one of the very first to book tickets for himself and his students. Chris Hadfield has a new book out entitled “You are here (around the world in 92 minutes).”
The students had an amazing and inspirational talk by Chris, illustrated with some of the photographs that he took on his three space missions. He described take-off in the space shuttle and the differences in landing again in that and the Soyuz capsule. When asked by Rupert Boyle to describe a typical day in space, he enlightened the audience with stories of microgravity experiments, biological experiments on giant white lab rats (the astronauts themselves) – including an amusing story of what usually happens when you try to take a urine sample in zero gravity. Afterwards Chris played his guitar and gave the audience a rendition of his now famous version of David Bowie’s ‘Space Oddity’.
The College has recently secured £500 funding from the Institute of Physics, the highest amount that can be awarded. This money will be used to build a radio telescope and to purchase a solar telescope, the money will also go towards trips to Daresbury Science Park and Jodrell Bank Observatory.
