CareWorx, Holland and Mirifex Study Use of Mobile Devices for Patient Care in Long Term Care Facilities

Orangeville, Canada, January 16, 2015 --(PR.com)-- CareWorx Inc., a leading technology solutions provider to the North American senior care industry, has announced a successful pilot of their Horizon mobile solution, tailored for the rigors of a Long Term Care environment. The project launched and tested the complete CareWorx mobile lineup of best in breed products for senior care facilities looking to take their patient care bedside.
Undertaken in partnership with Holland Management and Mirifex Consulting, the project took place over a four week period at one of Holland’s senior care facilities, Country Club Retirement Campus in Dover, Ohio. Nursing staff were provided with several mobile devices for the pilot, including iPad minis, iPod touches and a mobile cart with touchscreen kiosk. In addition to the hardware, the pilot encompassed the full range of CareWorx Horizon accessories and services: ruggedization cases, charging and storage station, upgraded wifi, and management services to monitor and secure the devices.
Over the last decade, forward-thinking senior care facilities have adopted electronic health records and point-of-care software like Point Click Care to better service their residents. CareWorx wall mounted touchscreens allow care providers to document services on kiosks in the hallway, as soon as the care is completed, resulting in more efficient and more accurate documentation. Adding mobile devices to the caregiver’s battery of tools furthers this dynamic, as devices are taken right into resident rooms and documentation can be completed bedside, as the care is provided. “We still are seeing about 97% of the market utilizing kiosks and touchscreens for their EHR needs,” commented Mark Tomzak, CEO of CareWorx, “but offering a complete mobile managed solution for specific roles and/or processes allows our clients to choose end user capabilities that meet their desired outcomes.”
One nursing assistant at the Dover home commented on the mobile devices: “They were able to go room to room which made it less likely for us to forget something that needed (to be) charted.” 93% of participants felt the mobile devices reduced the amount of time required to complete documentation and 100% said they made their jobs easier. Administrators reported that the level of documentation increased with use of the mobile devices, as well as the timeliness and detail. According to Shann Teen Chance, Director of Nursing, “The documentation appeared to be more complete. Our staff was able to chart anywhere they were in the building.” From a facility viewpoint, faster and more accurate documentation translates to higher reimbursements and a better standard of patient care, as staff spends less time on charting and more time with their residents.
