WNSC Lecturers Visit HS Marston Aerospace

Oswestry, United Kingdom, February 07, 2015 --(PR.com)-- Engineering, Science and Maths lecturers from Walford and North Shropshire College (WNSC) went to see the Aerospace industry in action this week. Their aim was to discover how the College’s Level 3 BTEC Engineers, Mathematicians and Scientists could best begin their careers in industry. The lecturers visited HS Marston, a manufacturer of components for the aerospace and motorsport industries which is based in Wolverhampton.

As well as Engineering, WNSC trains apprentices in Hair and Beauty, Agriculture, Gamekeeping, Health and Social Care and Construction amongst others. We also look for employers that our students can progress to, and the needs of local industries.

HS Marston offer apprenticeships from age 18 that would suit students from the College perfectly, taking their training right through to Masters Degree level if they want to go that far. They also offer industrial placements to undergraduates on ‘sandwich’ courses, for those students who opt for university rather than an apprenticeship.

The lecturers met a group of HS Marston’s current and former apprentices, ranging from the newest, in their first year, to those who have completed a fully funded degree with the company and are now travelling to locations such as Mexico, Canada, Poland and Germany. They were an outstanding bunch of young people and the lecturers were especially impressed with the care the company took to develop them.

The visiting lecturers from WNSC included; Bill Fowler (Engineering), Rupert Boyle (Science) and Nicola Martin (Maths). Nicola commented "It was an inspiring visit and I’d be more than happy to direct our students to HS Marston to begin their engineering careers." Rupert added "It was an interesting day, seeing an engineering company and the skills that they require is always a good thing so that we can make our lessons relevant and grounded."

The College is planning to take a group of students who are interested in a career in Engineering on a visit there in the near future’ the students will have a tour of the factory floor, a chance to chat with the apprentices, a glimpse of the type of opportunities that could be available to them and be given advice on the characteristics that the company looks for when selecting their apprentices.

WNSC offer training and assessment of 16-18yr old apprentices. In College, apprentices study on City and Guilds or BTEC courses relevant to their placement.
