Tuskegee Lights the Way for New Technology Homeland Security, NHTSA Show Interest in Smart, Safe Cities™

On November 20th the city of Tuskegee, in partnership with Intellimesh Systems, LLC, will begin beta-testing a new “re-invented” traffic light.

Montgomery, AL, November 15, 2007 --(PR.com)-- On November 20th the city of Tuskegee, in partnership with Intellimesh Systems, LLC, will begin beta-testing a new “re-invented” traffic light.

“These days managing traffic at a given intersection is not enough,” the inventor and patent owner, Darren Maull, said at a recent press conference. “Traffic throughout a city needs to be managed in real-time utilizing an integrated network of traffic lights.” Intellimesh's proprietary wireless mesh-node based intelligent traffic system replaces antiquated hard-wired systems, creating a highly intelligent, more productive and powerful field-based computer system. Thus, traffic lights become controllable from any location within the network. “…and all this,” shared Maull, “…was accomplished under the divine inspiration of God.”

Intellimesh’s “Smart, Safe CitiesTM” concept encompasses the idea of using a high-speed wireless network infrastructure to deliver cost-effective services to small and medium sized cities, such as in car real-time information and alert system, Vehicle Infrastructure Integration applications (VII), immediate tornado warning system, instant child location services, cost-effective high-speed ISP services to small cities, mobile asset tracking and city services, such as automated meter reading for electric, water and gas.

The company has already attracted the attention of the Department of Homeland security and the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) because of the early warning and city wide control capabilities. Residents of Smart, Safe CitiesTM could be evacuated or notified of Amber Alerts easier and faster.

“Having near real time control over traffic patterns and intersections provides a huge number of benefits,” said Brian Ransom, President and CTO of Intellimesh, at the National Conference of Black Mayors 33rd Annual Conference. “Imagine a fire happening across town; with this system all of the traffic could be held still to allow for the firefighters to get to the fire faster. Just 30 seconds faster can save lives and property. But once you have a network up to link your traffic signals you can do so much more.”

“The full implementation of this system will happen over the next several months,” said Mr. Ransom, “but Tuskegee will be far ahead of the country when the system becomes fully operational. As a resident of Tuskegee and Alabama I’ll be proud to say that I live in the world’s first Smart, Safe City.”

It’s been almost 85 years since Garrett Morgan patented the first inexpensive to produce and operate traffic signal. Now, just as it has in the past, Tuskegee will be on the forefront of technological and social innovation by rolling out this “re-invented” traffic light. Thanks to the foresight of Johnny Ford, mayor, and the City Council Tuskegee will be the first city in the world to deploy this new technology.

Press conference and demonstration begin at 11 a.m., November 20, at the Kellogg Center on the Tuskegee University campus. All press and community leaders welcome. Representatives from Homeland Security; the National Signal Committee; FAWA; Microsoft; IWT (Innovative Wireless Technology); IST; Mid-Eastern Services; and the Mayor of Tuskegee and other dignitaries will be in attendance.
