Habitat on the Hill

Representative from South Shore Habitat for Humanity travels to Capitol Hill to advocate for expanding homeownership opportunities.

Weymouth, MA, February 11, 2015 --(PR.com)-- Martine Taylor, Executive Director, South Shore Habitat for Humanity is in Washington, D.C., Feb. 10 -12, to join more than 200 Habitat for Humanity leaders and supporters for the ninth annual Habitat on the Hill legislative conference. During these days of action, Habitat leaders will urge members of Congress to support programs and policies that help thousands of lower-income families across the country become successful homeowners.

During the event, attendees will hear from several experts on the housing market and its role in a robust economy, including U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julián Castro. Attendees will also participate in workshops to bolster local and organization-wide advocacy efforts to promote smart housing policy.

According to Taylor, “The average monthly rent in Massachusetts is the sixth highest in the nation. This conference gives all Habitat affiliates the opportunity to have our concerns heard by our national representatives. By working with our legislators and by partnering with the communities we serve, South Shore Habitat offers families an opportunity at home ownership.”

Additional speakers at the conference will include: U.S. Representatives Emanuel Cleaver (D-Missouri) and Aaron Schock (R-Illinois); CBS News White House correspondent Major Garrett; and Jonathan Reckford, CEO of Habitat for Humanity International.

During the event, Habitat for Humanity will also launch its 2015 Shelter Report, which focuses on residential energy efficiency and the increasingly disproportionate burden energy costs have on low-income families. Entitled “Less is More: Transforming Low-Income Communities through Energy Efficiency,” the report lays out a number of practical recommendations for policymakers to address this growing concern and how the U.S. can be a more prosperous nation through prudent energy policies.
