Irvine, CA, February 14, 2015 --(PR.com)-- The Humane Society of Ocean City, New Jersey, will be awarded the prestigious honor of Shelter of the Year for their work with homeless and displaced pets at this year’s Purina Pro Plan 60th Annual Show Dogs of the Year® Awards, presented by I-5 Publishing's Dogs in Review. The country’s top canine competitors come together for the black-tie event on Saturday, February 14, 2015 at Gotham Hall, New York, NY.
Trupanion, the exclusive sponsor of the Shelter of the Year Award, presents the honor to the Humane Society of Ocean City (HSOC) in recognition of their significant work in animal adoption, rescue and veterinary care. The Purina Pro Plan Show Dogs of the Year Awards are held in the highest esteem by the dog fancy community and represent the best of both dogs and industry professionals who have shown a consistency of success in the world of conformation.
The annual Purina Pro Plan Show Dogs of the Year Award statuettes, also known as The Winkies®, are presented to the year’s highest achievers in show dog categories, Special Industry Awards and Annual Achievement Awards. Along with Shelter of the Year, the Special Industry Awards also include Groomer of the Year and Trainer of the Year.
The HSOC, a private, non-profit (501)(c)(3) organization serving the community of Ocean City, New Jersey, operates a no-kill animal shelter, a veterinary medical center, an affordable spay/neuter clinic and a humane educational center.
Since 1964, HSOC has worked toward its goal of providing a compassionate and healthy environment for homeless animals until they can be placed into permanent homes or become permanent residents of the shelter. The HSOC strives to promote responsible pet ownership and reduce the suffering caused by pet overpopulation and animal cruelties by offering low cost spay/neuter solutions, and wellness and humane education programs to the community.
In addition, HSOC is also involved in animal control and rescue, dog therapy/companion program, a volunteer and fostering program, indoor feral cat colony, and behavioral programs. Their humane education program has reached more than 5,000 people since 2011. The veterinary center most recently reached an impressive milestone when it treated its 8,500th patient.
All of this is made possible every day by the caring staff, the dedicated volunteers, the generosity of the City of Ocean City, and the compassionate community, which has enabled HSOC to serve animals in need for 50 years.

The Show Dogs of the Year Awards have spent the past 60 years celebrating the excellence of the top Group winning show dogs, along with their owners, handlers and breeders. In order to win an award, a dog must achieve the most Group wins during a single calendar year at American Kennel Club-sanctioned conformation shows. Other recognitions include various awards presented to top professionals within the show dogs industry, as well as the Dogs in Review Annual Achievement Awards, affectionately known as the Winkies. Currently the awards are sponsored by Purina® Pro Plan® and presented by Dogs in Review. These awards are presented at a black tie banquet held in New York City immediately prior to the Westminster Kennel Club show in February.
