Teen Charity Director from Florida Building Self-Worth to Many in the Appalachian Mountains
16 year old Destin Nation Mission Charity Director, Summer Allen from Destin, Florida collects toiletries and trucks them every 4-8 weeks from FL to the “Heart of Appalachia” in KY and distributes them to the neediest and forgotten.
Destin, FL, February 25, 2015 --(PR.com)-- 16 year old Charity Director, Summer Allen is destined to help build up pride and self-esteem to folks in the most impoverished parts of America. Central Appalachia has a 95.4% white population. The loss of their main industries of coal mining and tobacco harvesting has lead to a dramatic increase of drug abuse, incest and depression. After following a pastor to deliver the normal household goods and clothing from Florida to this area in 2012 and seeing how most people lived, the Allen family knew they had to do something about this, even from 1000 miles away. "Many help others in other countries, but it was heartbreaking to see that people live like this in America. Living in a destination town with a plethora of hotels and resorts we knew we could talk to managers and ask them to help us collect left over toiletries and unclaimed items people left in their rooms. Plus we collect and send detergents, cleaning supplies, first aid supplies and beauty supplies. Many pitched in and Destin Nation Mission was born. The newspapers heard about our plight and with their help as well as magazine stories, many people started donating extra items they had at their homes and under their cabinets, as well as places like Walgreens offered to put collection boxes in their stores. Now we sort all items in a huge warehouse instead of our home. We truck items to Beattyville, KY to be distributed and now serve over 800 families in 11 towns," says Summer Allen. Summer, the youngest of 6, is the Charity Director and oversees all collections, sorting, and donations, as well as becoming a pinnacle role model to many teens along Florida's Emerald Coast.
