Advancing Girls’ Education, Empowerment and Women’s Economic Prosperity - Asante Africa Foundation to Host Thought Leaders on Both Coasts
Asante Africa Foundation is excited to announce two panels discussing Girls’ Education, Empowerment and Prosperity, which will be held in the Bay Area (March 3) and New York City (March 8) in honor of International Women’s Day.
Oakland, CA, February 27, 2015 --(PR.com)-- On Tuesday, March 3rd, Bay Area thought leaders will come together in San Mateo, California, for the second event in Asante Africa Foundation’s “Intersection” thought leadership series. The event will feature thought leaders from a variety of industry sectors, to discuss the intersection of policy, advocacy, and implementation of girls’ education around the world.
The series kicked off last November, when over 200 people attended a panel discussing the impact of education on sustainable investment opportunities in Africa.
“Women’s rights and equality are very much in the spotlight, from Davos to the Oscars. We hope this panel will shine light on the importance of education and empowerment of girls in East Africa and around the world,” said Erna Grasz, Founder and CEO of Asante Africa Foundation. “We’re thrilled to have such incredible speakers join us to discuss how it impacts not only girls’ individual prosperity, but that of their local, national and global economies.”
Bindu Garapaty, CEO of The Happy Leader, a leadership and development firm, will kick off the event with the topic of “Fierce and Feminine: Accelerating the Next Decade of Change.” Lisa M. Lambert, VP & Managing Director of the Diversity Equity Fund at Intel Capital & Chair of UPWARD (United Professional Women Accelerating Relationships & Development) will join Grasz for a “fireside chat,” sharing their perspectives as two women who beat the odds by rising to senior executive ranks in technology companies.
The panel to follow will feature insight from the thought leaders below:
- Peter Laugharn, Senior Advisor at Firelight Foundation
- Sasha Rabsey, Co-Founder of Present Purpose Network
- Ashley Orton, Global Programs Director at Asante Africa Foundation
- Sidee Dlamini, Graduate Research Assistant at UC Berkeley

Asante Africa Foundation is also convening a panel, for the second consecutive year, at The NGO Committee on the Status of Women (NGO CSW) annual forum during the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) meeting on March 8 in New York City. The NGO CSW Forum brings together NGO representatives from around the world for two weeks to network, share strategies and best practices in preparation for the UN Commission of Status of Women sessions.
Grasz will moderate “Partnerships that Accelerate Change to Always Keep Girls in School,” highlighting successful interventions on the ground that lead to sustainable change with the potential for scale. Participants include representatives from the Small Projects Foundation, UNESCO and Procter & Gamble.
