Ernie Gonzales Promotes Reading with Ullom Elementary for Nevada Reading Week
To help promote Nevada Reading Week Ernie Gonzales of the Gonzales Team recently visited J.M. Ullom Elementary to read and speak to the students about the importance of reading.
Henderson, NV, March 07, 2015 --(PR.com)-- The idea of Nevada reading week was conceived in 1985, by Bill Abrams of the Nevada State Department of Education with a group of teachers to encourage the love of reading. The idea was to promote a week-long celebration giving children the opportunity to read and be read to in all Nevada schools and public libraries. Each year all activities, competitions and speakers are based on a common theme to engage avid readers and reluctant readers to join in. The theme for 2014-15 is “Got Books? Be a Superhero...Read” Usually Nevada Reading week coincides with Dr. Seuss’ birthday in February however this year it will be celebrated March 2 - March 6.
With this years theme focusing on superheros, Mr. Krauss of J.M. Ullom Elementary School brought together several community heroes to read to and encourage the children to use reading to become community heroes themselves. A few of the community heroes were Governor Sandoval, Rudy Ruettiger (motivational Speaker), Kevin Child(Clark County School District Trustee), Danny and Amy Tarkanian, Miss Nevada Lisa Song, Forrest Griffin (UFC Hall of Famer) and Several Veterans of the armed forces such as Ernie Gonzales. Ernie served as a military police officer for 10 years and is very passionate about volunteering in the community.
Ernie read to and shared with the children of J.M. Ullom Elementary how his love of reading about history inspired him to join the military to travel around the world. The children enjoyed asking many questions about his experiences and what the other cultures were like. “Inspiring the children to read through my love of reading and seeing their reactions were very inspiring to keep volunteering in our local Henderson, NV Schools,” says Ernie.
There are several Nevada reading week events scheduled throughout the Henderson and Las Vegas Valley and can be found on the Clark County Website at www.ccsd.net.
To date Ullom Elementary children have read over 50,000 books and their goal is to read over 75,000 by the end of the year. The Gonzales Team is hoping to help with this goal by collecting gently used books to donate. If you would like to donate books to the Gonzales Team book drive you can drop them off at 10424 S. Eastern Ave. #200, Henderson NV 89052.
