Neighbour Collaboration Achieves Successful Japanese Knotweed Removal
An agreement made between neighbouring properties will produce a lower risk of future encroachment of the invasive Japanese knotweed.
Manchester, United Kingdom, March 20, 2015 --(PR.com)-- When Japanese knotweed growth is found in one property, it is quite possible that the rhizome spread from the plant will be present within neighbouring properties - especially where the knotweed is within 2m of the property boundary.
It is advised to homeowners to take a pro-active approach in instigating a solution before it becomes a more serious, costly and difficult issue to remedy.
Where knotweed is located close to the property boundary and/or in neighbouring property the advice would be to include the co-operation of the neighbours wherever possible.
A cross boundary solution is more likely to result in satisfactory eradication of the Japanese knotweed without the risk of future encroachment.
The below case study by Japanese Knotweed Ltd is a good example of co-operation:
Recently a home owner became aware of the presence of knotweed on their property in Lincoln, Lincolnshire. As a Property Care Association member Japanese Knotweed Ltd. were instructed to complete a Property Risk Survey, which found knotweed growing close to the properties habitable space (RICS Category 4 Risk –the highest risk) and the property boundary. The neighbouring property as well as being at risk of rhizome spread was found to have a further stand of knotweed.
On receipt of this information the two properties decided to work together in instructing JKL to remove the plant. This meant the survey and remediation costs were shared between both parties who were assured of a robust cross boundary solution.
As the knotweed presented a Category 4 Risk an instant eradication method was recommended and preferred by both home owners. This would involve the excavation of the knotweed and licensed cart-away of the waste for disposal at a specially licensed landfill facility in accordance to the Environmental Protection Act.
Specialist root barrier was installed where full depth excavation of the knotweed was not possible due to the risk of making adjacent structures unstable. The root barrier will prevent the re-growth of knotweed from underneath as long as it stays intact.
On completion of the works JKL re-installed the respective hard and soft landscaping of the property gardens.
This included replacing all the old clay drainage system which had become infested with knotweed rhizome. A brand new PVC drainage system was installed.
By having the knotweed removed from both properties, neither home owner had to be concerned about any promise of on-going herbicide treatment to control knotweed growth by the neighbours.
Japanese Knotweed Ltd have many years’ experience working alongside homeowners in dealing with Japanese knotweed. They encourage and are happy to co-ordinate neighbours in approaching their Japanese knotweed problem together.
