LymeBuddies, Together with Jimmy the Greek’s and the Maine Mall, Are Putting Final Touches on 4th Annual Jimmy the Greek’s Maine Mall 5k for Lyme Disease Awareness
With three successful 5K events under their belt, LymeBuddies are working hard behind the scenes, along with Jimmy the Greek’s and the Maine Mall, to put on spectacular 4th Annual Jimmy the Greek’s Maine Mall 5K for Lyme Disease Awareness.
Portland, ME, April 17, 2015 --(PR.com)-- LymeBuddies (www.lymebuddies.com), the brainchild of Amie Levasseur and Angela Coulombe, two “moms from Maine”, offers support to those affected by Lyme disease and holds events to help raise awareness about the disease.
As reported by the CDC, there are more new cases of Lyme Disease in the US annually than Hepatitis, HIV, Colon Caner and Breast Cancer. Last year there were 300,000 new cases reported; that’s 5,770 cases per week, or 822 cases per day! Prevention and early detection are the keys to overcoming the disease. Early symptoms of Lyme Disease include flu-like symptoms, swollen lymph nodes, headaches, fatigue, muscle and joint aches that make day-to-day functions such as going to work, looking after a family or doing regular housework very difficult and sometimes impossible.
LymeBuddies co-founder Amie Levasseur says "When people get diagnosed with a serious illness they usually get a lot of information, resources and follow up from their medical providers. With Lyme Disease, patients are often told they will be cured with a short round of antibiotics. But for those who miss early diagnosis and treatment, symptoms are much more aggressive and long term and patients end up feeling scared and alone looking for answers. We want to help bridge that gap. We aim to help guide people through prevention, education, advocacy, awareness and most importantly hope."
"Keeping the conversation around Lyme going is crucial to continuing to raise awareness about the disease," said Angela Coulombe, of LymeBuddies. “We are extremely lucky that over the years we have developed a relationship within our communities to help provide information and support to those who need it. Keeping the topic out there, front and center, definitely helps the continuum in building awareness. We are also so thankful for those who give of their time to help make this event a fun, family-orientated event.”
