Twin City Kickboxers Fighting for TEAM U.S.A.
Minneapolis, MN, November 23, 2007 --(PR.com)-- Jon Lewis from Minneapolis and Neil Osten from Champlin will be competing as members of Team USA at the kickboxing World Championships in Coimbra, Portugal beginning November 29th. The 4 day tournament is held every two years by the World Association of Kickboxing Organizations (WAKO) and this year’s event will feature more than 600 competitors representing over 70 countries.
Both fighters train out of Cellar Kickboxing and Martial Arts in New Brighton, MN and earned their spot on Team USA by winning their respective weight class at the 2007 WAKO U.S. Open Tournament was held this past summer outside Chicago, IL. Cellar Kickboxing’s Derek Knudson also won his weight class and a place on the U.S. team, but decided not to compete in Portugal due to personal reasons. The U.S. is sending ten fighters this year (10 males and 1 female), all of which will be competing in separate weight classes.
Jon Lewis is 29 years old and is a 3x amateur kickboxing World Champion in the super lightweight division. He will be fighting in Portugal in the 63.5 kg weight class (139.9 lbs). Lewis is an instructor at Cellar Kickboxing and currently holds a record of 13 wins with only 1 defeat. This is the first year the U.S. has sent an all-amateur team to the WAKO World Championships, but Lewis is expected to do very well against the best professional and amateur fighters from across the world.
Neil Osten is 24 years old and is a former swimmer for the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers. His lifetime of training and swimming in the pool has helped Osten develop explosive power while maintaining excellent flexibility; both are paying huge dividends in his new sport of kickboxing. With less than two years of training in the ring, Osten may lack some experience to his teammates, but he has proven he can handle tough competition. At the 2007 WAKO U.S. Open Tournament Osten earned his spot on Team USA when he knocked out the division’s #1 seeded veteran, Steve Fridh, just 10 seconds into the third round with a round kick to the head. Osten will compete in the 91 kg and under, heavyweight division (200.2 lbs).
Lewis, Osten, and Cellar Kickboxing’s fight team head trainer, Justin Whiley will be departing for Portugal on November 24th. These two talented athletes will do an excellent job representing our country and the great state of Minnesota. For more information please visit http://www.CellarKickboxing.com
