Catholic Matchmaker New Zealand was formed on 29 September 2007 by Clare and Glen Omvig, an early internet romance success story, and under the authority of Archbishop John Dew. The pre-launch, from the end of August to September 29, was a free period for members, during which time lessons were learned.
“We found that we, like all the other dating/relationship sites that have free membership periods, are targeted by scammers who spam the membership (write to all the members of the opposite sex), or try to get money out of people who may have developed a relationship with them over a short period of time,” Clare Omvig of Catholic Matchmaker New Zealand says. “These people are not interested in paying for membership – they are interested in getting money out of members – so they don’t bother us any more at all.”
“We are glad we had the free period at the pre-launch of our Catholic Matchmaker Site – as we were able to counter these occurrences when we went live, and this led to the decision to make the site completely private – allowing only paying members to view other members. Since launch, we have had no incidents of fraudulent members joining – so our members at least can be assured they are communicating with a real person when they take that first step in faith.”
So much so that Catholic Matchmaker is now seeing couples forming, with the first couple announcing their plan to further their relationship and looking forward to a future together. Names and places are kept firmly under wraps and will not be disclosed under the privacy terms and conditions of the website.
“We will now be targeting our promotions at the parish level, so that Catholics are aware we exist, under the correct authority (we have the blessing and endorsement of Archbishop John Dew – and have our own pastor in Fr Ron Bennett), and that this truly is a safe place to meet other Catholics”.
