Sealed with a Kiss Packages Delivers Supplies, Hope to Students in Need
Sealed with a Kiss Packages (SWAK Pack) is a care package delivery service for low-income college students.
Saratoga Springs, NY, April 26, 2015 --(PR.com)-- Sealed with a Kiss Packages (SWAK Pack) is a care package delivery service for low-income college students. The project was founded in fall 2014.
In the United States, all college students are feeling financial hardships as tuition costs increase drastically. This burden is especially challenging to low-income students, who currently account for 38 percent of the college population. Each year more low-income students are choosing to go to college. Many will not make that decision, however, due to a variety of reasons, including the fact that these students have difficulty affording the most basic daily necessities involved with residential college life.
Care packages are filled with essential items such as school supplies, toiletries, snacks, and clothing. The goal is to ease the burden of affording these items, as well as boost student morale and encourage them in their journey to obtaining a college education.
Founder Liz Witbeck came up with the idea for SWAK Pack when she realized that many low-income students were unable to go to college due to basic financial hardships. Witbeck grew up in Warrensburg, NY. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies from Hobart and William Smith Colleges and her Master's in Education Leadership and Administration from California Polytechnic State University.
“SWAK Pack is much more than just care packages,” explains Witbeck. “It’s about letting these students know they are cared about. Getting mail and care packages from home is actually a really big part of college culture. Students get excited to open their mail box and find something from home. Care packages are awesome because it’s a way that parents let their kids know they are thinking about them. But if you’re low-income you’re probably never going to get a care package from your parents – your family is too poor to send you something like that, or they don’t even know what a care package is because they’ve never been to college, or maybe you don’t even have a family to send you something.”
Sealed with a Kiss Packages is the first and only program to send care packages to low-income college students. The program will launch in fall 2015 at select residential colleges. Eventually the program will run at colleges across the United States.
The project has recently launched a crowdfunding campaign on GoFundMe to raise money. Sealed with a Kiss Packages plans to raise $5000 through crowdfunding by August. SWAK Pack is also eagerly looking for people to serve on the board of directors. Colleges who are interested in participated are encouraged to contact.
The ultimate goal for SWAK Pack is to help low-income students in the pursuit of their college education. Witbeck hypothesizes that students who receive these care packages will also see an increased grade point average and increased retention rates.
