The Selection Committee for the Mamaroneck School Board Announces Endorsed Candidates
The Selection Committee for the Mamaroneck School Board of Education, has endorsed three candidates to fill the upcoming Mamaroneck School Board vacancies: Two candidates, Melany Gray, a nearly 24-year resident of the district, and Roger H. Martin, a 20-year district resident are first-term incumbent members seeking re-election. Paul Bulova, who has lived in the district for nearly 11 years, is a new candidate for the Board of Education.
Mamaroneck, NY, April 30, 2015 --(PR.com)-- The Selection Committee for the Mamaroneck School Board of Education, a citizen’s committee comprised of 24 elected independent and non-partisan resident volunteers representing each of the four Mamaroneck elementary school districts, has endorsed three candidates to fill the upcoming Mamaroneck School Board of Education vacancies: Two candidates, Melany Gray, a nearly 24-year resident of the district, and Roger H. Martin, a 20-year district resident are first-term incumbent members seeking re-election. Paul Bulova, who has lived in the district for nearly 11 years, is a new candidate for the Board of Education.
Candidates for the Mamaroneck School Board of Education are voted on during the election on May 19, the same date as the Mamaroneck School Budget vote.
Samuel Riter, Selection Committee Co-Chair, said of the two incumbents seeking reelection, “The Committee’s decision to endorse Melany and Roger reflects our belief that as current board members, their contributions have been instrumental in helping the Board pursue their goals in key focus areas including student engagement, student achievement, school climate, college and career readiness, community engagement and financial sustainability. These two individuals will continue to best serve and represent the interests of the community at large and will continue to be great partners to the five other Board members and Superintendent, Dr. Robert Shaps. As the current Vice-President of the Board, Melany has proven herself to be an effective and capable trustee for the community. Roger has successfully leveraged his experience as a career educator and has made key contributions across a number of initiatives, including in his role on the Board’s curriculum committee and as the Board’s liaison to the High School.”
Of the new candidate, Mr. Riter said, “Paul is a dedicated parent of young children in the district. He is also a coach and PTA member who has volunteered his time and effort to supporting the school community. The Selection Committee feels his election to the Board will be a natural progression for him to continue contributing to our school district and add new and valuable perspectives to the Board.”
Robin Nichinsky will be stepping down from the Board of Education at the conclusion of her third term in June. Mr. Riter said, “Robin has made an immeasurable contribution to the Mamaroneck community throughout her nearly decade-long tenure on the Board. She has selflessly volunteered countless hours and given more of herself than we could hope to acknowledge. She is a model for community engagement, and the Selection Committee is immeasurably grateful for her stewardship throughout the years. Our schools, our community and our children are all better off because of Robin.”
Melany Gray is completing her first term on the board, serving in the position of Vice President, member of the Law & Policy, Communications and Audit Committees and the Transportation Subcommittee. Melany is also a member of the School Based Health Center Task Force and Facilities Use Task Force. Melany has an impressive set of school and community involvement including Liaison to the PT Council of the District and the Wellness Committee. She has held leadership positions as the PT Council President from June 2010 to June 2011 as well as Co-Presidents of Mamaroneck High School, Hommocks Middle School and Central School, all of which are part of the Mamaroneck School district. Melany has lived in the district for nearly 24 years.
In seeking reelection Melany states her three year experience will allow her to even better serve the community, “My work on the Board to date has been a powerful learning experience, and I have learned much about school law and policy, finance, curriculum, data and culture. I have invested myself not only in the committee work to which I have been assigned, but also in attending other committee meetings as I am able, and in getting out in the community -- at the Listening Tour meetings, superintendent coffees and other opportunities to hear what parents are thinking -- so that I can better understand and represent our community.”
Melany is an attorney and has worked for Collazo Florentino & Keil LLP and Simpson Thacher & Bartlett both of New York. She clerked for the Hon. John E. Sprizzo, United States District Judge, Southern District of New York. Her more than two decades in the Legal world has been invaluable to the Board.
Melany received her B.S. at University of North Carolina (B.S. Pharmacy 1982) (Rho Chi, Pharmacy Honor Society) and J.D. graduated summa cum laude from St. John’s University School of Law (J.D. 1986).
Roger H. Martin is a 20 year resident of the district and a graduate of Mamaroneck High School. He has volunteered to perform mock interviews with MHS seniors and juniors.
Roger has dedicated his entire career to education. Having served as the President of Randolph-Macon College in Ashland Virginia (1997-2007) and President of Moravian College in Bethlehem Pennsylvania (1986-1997), he is highly qualified to understand the skills a prospective college student requires. He is currently on the Board of Directors for the British Schools and Universities Foundation of New York City.
The University of Chicago Press will be publishing Roger’s new book titled Off to College: A Guide for Parents this coming July. Mamaroneck High School plays a central role in the book as it is based on a series of interviews done four years ago with District parents.
Roger has earned a BA from Drew University, a BD, MA, from Yale University and a PhD from Oxford University.
Paul Bulova is seeking his first term on the Mamaroneck School Board of Education. Paul is a parent of children in the district and an active contributor to the school community. Paul has dedicated time to serve as a member of the School Based Health Center task force and the Mamaroneck Avenue School PTA. He is also a coach in the Mamaroneck Youth Football League. Paul’s involvement as a parent volunteer has enabled him to work with two Board members and the school administration, and has motivated him to play a larger role in helping to shape the district’s education program as a Board member.
Paul has worked in the healthcare sector since graduating from college,. He worked for Merck & Co., Inc. for nearly 11 years and is currently employed by UCB Inc., a Belgian Biotech company, for nearly three years. Paul states, “Healthcare also one of the most complex sectors in the United States. Not only is it in a consistent state of flux, but there are multiple parties influencing every aspect of healthcare. Working in this environment has given me invaluable experience in a wide range of competencies.”
Paul earned his B.S. in Biology from Union College in Schenectady, New York.
