Local Artist Celebrates Sixth Year of Arizona Satire with Monthly Multimedia Minicomic Book
Phoenix, AZ, April 30, 2015 --(PR.com)-- Local artist Russ Kazmierczak, Jr. begins his sixth year self-publishing a superhero satire of Arizona news and culture with a monthly, multimedia minicomic book series.
In 2010, the focus of Kazmierczak’s Amazing Arizona Comics was Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s overspending, which he explained with the concept of a secret, “super deputy” posse. Now, Kazmierczak finds the concept more timely than ever, with Sheriff Arpaio’s recent testimony of secret investigations.
“If Sheriff Joe is conducting secret missions,” Kazmierczak says, “it stands to reason that he would use superheroes to do it. That’s why he’s been able to get away with it for so long!”
According to Kazmierczak, the biggest challenge of self-publishing a local satire is keeping up with the fast pace of the news cycle. “In February, I published my tenth issue,” he explains. “It featured the Super Bowl, the North Korea Sony hack, racial tensions with police, the inauguration of Governor Doug Ducey, even Left Shark. I was happy with how easily all of those trending topics came together into a single narrative. A week later, it was all obsolete.”
This challenge has led Kazmierczak to begin his sixth year self-publishing Amazing Arizona Comics with a monthly schedule, beginning in May.
With an emphasis on Arizona culture, Kazmierczak has begun to incorporate multimedia into his graphic design. For his latest story, Kazmierczak took photographs of the Paul Bunyon/Muffler Man statues in Phoenix, Tucson, and Flagstaff and manipulated them to appear alongside his characters on the comic book page.
“I want the comic to be current and authentic,” he concludes. “I hope people that live in Arizona will read the stories and think, oh, yeah, I know exactly where that is!”
Kazmierczak is funding his monthly effort with a Kickstarter, called “Amazing Arizona Comics Monthly 2015.”
