Whitefish Credit Union Junior Board to Host Colors for a Cause 5K Fun Run

Whitefish, MT, May 13, 2015 --(PR.com)-- Whitefish Credit Union’s Junior Board of Directors will host a “Colors for a Cause” 5K Fun Run at the Kalispell Youth Athletic Complex on Sunday, May 17 at 1 p.m.

This free and family-friendly event will benefit The Abbie Shelter, the primary service provider for victims of domestic and sexual violence in the Flathead Valley. The 12-member Junior Board of Directors, composed of sophomore, junior and senior students from all four area high schools, organized the fun run as part of the program’s year-end community service project, said Whitefish Credit Union’s Business Development Director Sue Schenck.

“Students on our Junior Board learn how a Credit Union operates firsthand through monthly meetings with our Board of Directors and guest speakers from the world of finance. At the end of each year we task our Junior Board with creating and managing a project that benefits our community,” said Schenck. “Along with financial education, community service is something we value very highly at the Credit Union and we’re proud to see our Junior Board take the reins on this while helping out a great cause in our neighborhood.”

Organizers are encouraging individuals to take part in the event in any way they see fit, as long as they’re having fun. Runners, walkers, skippers and joggers are all welcome at the 5K. At various points along the route volunteers will coat participants with non-toxic dye in every color of the rainbow as they go by. Keyersten Siebenaler, a junior from Glacier High School and member of the Credit Union’s Junior Board, has participated in color runs before and believes the event will help draw the local community closer together.

“One of our goals for the 5K is to create a fun atmosphere for everyone involved,” said Siebenaler. “We would like community members to walk away from the event feeling like they helped the community, donated to a good cause, learned about Whitefish Credit Union’s values, and also did a good service to their personal health.”

Hilary Shaw is The Abbie Shelter’s executive director. She’s thankful for the Junior Board’s support and hopes it inspires more young people to think about how they can help out in their own communities.

“The Abbie Shelter is so grateful for this support from Whitefish Credit Union,” she said. “We depend on community donations to keep our doors open, and we love when people find a way to fundraise for our cause and have fun at the same time.”
