Dr. Ayers has over 40 years’ experience in the education field and is currently a Professor Emeritus at The Ohio State University (OSU) in the College of Medicine, Department of Pathology in Columbus, Ohio. She holds a Certificate of Qualification from the American Board of Pathology in Clinical and Anatomical Pathology and has special expertise in infectious disease pathology and research interest in HIV/AIDS related malignancies. Her clinical practice is in Transfusion Medicine at the Wexner Medical Center and The James Cancer Hospital. Research grants are from the National Cancer Institute (NCI/NIH) in support of work in the US and in sub-Saharan Africa regarding translational research and capacity building in the pathology of HIV/AIDS. Dr. Ayers was honored as an Outstanding Microbiologist in 1982, awarded the Earline Kutscher Memorial Lectureship in 1991, selected as Foundation Lecturer, National Foundation for Microbiology Lectures Program for 1998-2000 and elected to the OSU Emeritus Academy in 2014. She is affiliated with ISBER. Dr. Ayers has published over 100 peer reviewed journal articles and 233 national and international conference proceeding and symposia publications and given over 241 invited presentations. She received her B.S. in Zoology in 1962 from Duke University and her M.D. in 1967 from Duke University School of Medicine with honors.
