Lake Eola Charter School and Orlando Fashion Square Present The 2015 Space, Technology & Engineering Program Mission to Gale Crater, Mars
A 45 hour student space simulation mission by Lake Eola Charter School’s (LECS) Science, Technology & Engineering Program (STEP) will be held May 17-19, 2015 at Orlando Fashion Square shopping mall located at 3201 East Colonial Drive in Orlando, Florida. The Premiere and Media Event will be held on Sunday, May 17, 2015 at 7:00 pm at Fashion Square Mall. Media is invited to attend.
Orlando, FL, May 14, 2015 --(PR.com)-- During the mission LECS students in grades seven and eight will fill the roles of astronauts, flight directors, mission specialists, biological and environmental specialists, computer and video engineers, and educational liaisons in a simulated NASA mission to Gale Crater on Mars, the landing site of NASA’s Mars rover, Curiosity.
The special guest speaker is Ms. Annie Caraccio, Chemical Engineer at the Kennedy Space Center. Ms. Caraccio is also a participant in the Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation (HI-SEAS) studying the human factors that contribute to astronaut crew function and performance during long-duration space travels such as those anticipated for a manned mission to Mars.The simulation will begin at 9:00 pm on Sunday, May 17th, immediately following the Premiere and Media Event.
About Lake Eola Charter School/STEP: The LECS STEP is a two-year program in which students design and construct a self-sufficient habitat to house student astronauts, design and operate a mission control, and establish a mission scenario and schedule. The students applied for positions, developed and trained for their part in this elaborate space simulation. Experiments were planned, designed and rehearsed. Audio and video systems were planned and designed as well as the computer and communication systems. Preparation for this simulation included classroom study learning about the U.S. and Russian space programs, visits to the Kennedy Space Center and the Museum of Science and Industry in Tampa, and making and launching model rockets. This is the fifth student space simulation mission for LECS.
STEP provides students with opportunities to develop leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills. It is a student-centered activity. The students learn to work cooperatively with other students of varying abilities and talents in this multi-faceted project.
Lake Eola Charter School was founded in 1998 and is an A-rated Orange County Public Charter School located in downtown Orlando.
