Flanbwayan, a nonprofit serving the Haitian Community in New York is celebrating its 10th year anniversary as an advocate of education for Haitian newcomer immigrant students.
Brooklyn, NY, May 19, 2015 --(PR.com)-- The Flanbwayan Haitian Literacy Project (Flanbwayan), a non-profit focused on helping Haitian newcomer high school youths, is pleased to announce its 10/10 campaign. In celebration of the organization’s 10th year anniversary, Flanbwayan is asking supporters to donate $10 to help fund programming and advocacy efforts. The $10 donation represents 10 years of service, $1 for each year the organization has served the Haitian community.
Since its founding in 2005, Flanbwayan has helped over 450 Haitian newcomer students to access and excel in New York City Public High Schools. The organization targets students aged 14-21 (8th grade and above) specifically because this population is least likely to receive supportive services and most likely to drop out. Flanbwayan prepares Department of Education (DOE) required documents and assesses each student’s needs and then matches them with a list of schools based on ELL (English Language Learner)/SIFE (Students with Interrupted Formal Education) programs and location. Flanbwayan’s staff also escorts families to high school enrollment centers and serve as translators and advocates. In addition to education advocacy city wide, the organization provides leadership activities such as literacy circles, summer reading and discussions, poetry workshops, leadership groups,and various cultural programs.
The 10/10 campaign aims to raise funds to continue Flanbwayan’s work and to educate the public about the issues that immigrant students face. In context, New York City has one of the largest public school systems in the U.S., with over 1.1million students and 1,800 schools (New York City Department of Education, www.http://schools.nyc.gov). Navigating the system without support, translation and information is difficult for immigrant families who are not English speakers. Lack of support for these students’ means that they have lower graduation rates than the general population of high school students. Flanbwayan’s goal is to change the statistics and to empower students to succeed by providing them with tools and support.
