About Robert G. McLean, Ph.D.
Dr. McLean is an Independent Consultant and Adjunct Faculty member at Kansas State University. He specializes in disease investigations, epidemiology and control. He consults on ecology and wildlife and investigated Ebola and Yellow Fever outbreaks in Africa, tropical diseases during 2-year assignment in Guatemala, Leptospirosis in Nicaragua and Wildlife Rabies, West Nile virus, other arboviruses and Lyme Disease in the U.S. Dr. McLean has expertise and experience in trapping, sampling and laboratory testing a large number and variety of wildlife species for zoonotic diseases. His background is with the federal government DoD, Department of Health and Human Services, Department of the Interior and Department of Agriculture. His honors and awards include Eagle Scout, All Ohio Basketball selection, Bowling Green State University basketball scholarship and student body president and distinguished service awards from Bowling Green State University, Centers for Disease Control, USDA, the Wildlife Disease Association and the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute. Dr. McLean has written 9 book chapters, 2 monographs and 200+ scientific publications. He was an Assistant Editor of the Journal of Wildlife Diseases, is on the Editorial Board of Vector-borne Zoonotic Diseases, the Assistant Editor for Pandemic Influenza Viruses and is a Reviewer for numerous scientific journals. He is affiliated with the Wildlife Disease Association and the Wildlife Society. Dr. McLean obtained a Ph.D. in Ecology and Wildlife Biology from Pennsylvania State University in 1966. He married Sonya R. Ubico, Ph.D. on May 17, 1990 and he has two daughters. In his spare time he enjoys hiking, photography and swimming.
Among his many accomplishments, Dr. Mclean served as the President of the Wildlife Disease Association and the Director of the USGS National Wildlife Health Center. He was the Research Program Manager of wildlife diseases at the USDA National Wildlife Health Center and served as a Captain and Chief of the Parasitology Branch with the 3rd U.S. Army Medical Laboratory. Dr. McLean was selected to brief the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works about the emergence of West Nile virus in the U.S. and was selected to serve as a member of the President’s Federal Intergovernmental Coordinating Committee to regularly brief congress on West Nile virus in the U.S. He has been featured in specials on CBS Animal World on bat research, CNN Presents on Ebola and National Geographic and the BBC on West Nile virus research.
