In the Daily Life of a Public School, There’s Never a Dull Moment
Dallas, TX, December 01, 2007 --(PR.com)-- Outskirts Press is pleased to bring you Circle the Wagons: A Collection of Public School Experiences. This delightful new anthology by long-time educator and administrator Newman Young is a compendium of anecdotes and stories covering more than half a century, each one told from the perspective of a student, a teacher, a parent, an administrator, or a school board member. In all, 31 educators have contributed their experiences to this book.
When asked why he picked such an unusual title, Young said, “During a hectic day at school and in very trying situations, teachers and principals will often say to one another, “We had better circle the wagons today! This all-purpose phrase captures the beloved chaos that can occur in any school setting.”
The tales are broken down into separate sections: Humorous, Serious, Rewarding, Overcoming, Reflections, and Parents. All aspects of daily school life are covered. For many readers, it will be a trip down Memory Lane and a time to reflect on their own educational upbringing. In his introduction, Young writes:
“Most adults will agree that our school days were among the happiest times of our lives. We remember our friends and classmates who hold a special place in our hearts. We remember that special teacher who made a difference in our lives. I cherish the memories of my school days as well as my career as an educator in the public schools. For this, I must say, ‘Thanks for the memories.’”
It is Young’s purpose to share these memories with a wider audience. “Unless recorded, they will be lost forever,” he says. Circle the Wagons is a wonderful time capsule for seeing how much school has—and has not changed—over the generations. The hairstyles and clothes that kids sport today may scandalize their parents and grandparents. Nor would their elders recognize today’s curriculum—remember when sex education wasn’t even mentioned at home, let alone taught in a classroom setting—but the core values of education remain the same: preparing children for the rigors and challenges of adulthood while still letting them be kids.
With U.S. wholesale distribution through Ingram and Baker & Taylor, and online availability through Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and OutskirtsPress.com, Circle the Wagons can meet consumer demand through both retail and library markets. It is a perfect addition for both home and school libraries.
