Stanbridge College Students, Faculty and Staff Raise $3,972.01 for Nepal Earthquake Relief

Stanbridge College raised $3,972.01 to aid victims of the recent earthquakes in Nepal, in partnership with the relief efforts of ShelterBox and Steps of Hope Outreach.

Irvine, CA, July 01, 2015 --(PR.com)-- Stanbridge College has raised $3,972.01 to provide relief to victims of the April 25th earthquake in Nepal. Stanbridge students, faculty and staff, assisted by the Stanbridge Student Occupational Therapy Association (SSOTA) and Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) programs, hosted several fund-raising activities, including bake sales and prize raffles to benefit two charities, ShelterBox, and Steps of Hope Outreach.

Two devastating earthquakes struck Nepal on April 25th and May 12th, leaving over 8,000 people dead and flattening more than 500,000 homes across the country. Nepal was left with an immediate need for emergency shelter, search-and-rescue equipment, and medical supplies, as the region continues to be at risk for further damage from aftershocks.

“We are grateful for this assistance,” said Mr. Bharat Tamang, a representative of Steps of Hope Outreach. “Many houses in Nepal are destroyed or irreparably damaged, and the generous donation from Stanbridge College will help many families tremendously.”

President of Stanbridge College, Mr. Yasith Weerasuriya stated, “Stanbridge College is very pleased to be able to contribute to the relief efforts in Nepal. Each year our students strive to give more to those in need, not just in our community, but around the world. It is an integral part of our identity that we encourage students to be involved in global issues.”

Global aid and support is one of the many focuses Stanbridge College takes in its community service. Through its award-winning and nationally recognized, REACH-Beyond the Classroom community service initiative, students are encouraged to give back to those in need in their local and global communities. From 2009 through 2014, Stanbridge has been named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering and civic engagement. In 2013 the Stanbridge community raised $10,196 to support Operation HOPE in bringing aid to those affected by Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. In 2011, students, staff, and faculty raised $1,450 to support Convoy of Hope and disaster relief for the town of Joplin, Missouri, which had been hit by several disastrous tornados.

ShelterBox is an international relief organization that provides emergency shelter and aid to communities around the world affected by disaster and crisis. In Nepal, families who have completely lost their homes will be provided with tents. Those in urban areas will be given shelter kits containing tarpaulins, rope and building tools. The kits can erect temporary shelters and assist in the repair of damaged homes.

Steps of Hope Outreach is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving living conditions for children at orphanages in Haiti, Mexico, and Nepal. The organization works in conjunction with Mercy Children Ministry and Grace Orphan Home to offer at-risk children a safe home where they are cared for. Many of the children are orphans, having been rescued from child labor and prostitution.
