Graham's Foundation Announces Its 2015 Miracles Award Honoree, Dr. Alan R. Spitzer
The global prematurity organization will recognize neonatologist and researcher Dr. Spitzer's contributions to improving preemie outcomes.
New York, NY, July 22, 2015 --(PR.com)-- Graham’s Foundation (http://GrahamsFoundation.org), the premier global organization for parents going through the journey of prematurity, announced it will honor four #champions4preemies at its October Tinis for Preemies event in New York City. Each honoree has been chosen for their commitment to improving outcomes for both preemies and their parents by helping moms and dads navigate the challenges of premature birth, empowering more parental participation in the NICU and enabling better communication between parents and doctors. This year's Miracles Award recipient will be Dr. Alan R. Spitzer, a prominent neonatal researcher whose own grandson was born at 30 weeks gestation.
"We've chosen to recognize #champions4preemies – people who've dedicated their lives to improving outcomes for preemies and families," said Graham's Foundation president Nick Hall, who founded Graham's Foundation with his wife Jennifer after they experienced the birth of twins at just 25 weeks before facing the trials of the neonatal intensive care unit and the loss of one child. "In doing so we aim to raise awareness of not only the impact of prematurity, but also the need to increase funding and research into improving outcomes for future preemies and families. Supporting people like Dr. Spitzer is crucial to the continuing evolution of preemie care."
Dr. Spitzer is a neonatal researcher and academician, and oversees clinical research as well as continuing medical education and clinical quality initiatives at the Pediatrix Medical Group. Dr. Spitzer has published extensively in the field of Neonatal Medicine, with more than 230 peer-review publications, book chapters, and editorials. He has had a special interest in the areas of neonatal lung diseases, neurological injury during the neonatal period, and infant apnea and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) throughout his career.
Most recently, he has initiated studies that examine the proteomic evaluation of nutrition in the extremely low birth weight neonate, and outcomes and quality improvement in neonatal medicine. He has edited two textbooks, Intensive Care of the Fetus and Neonate, and Fetal and Neonatal Secrets (with Richard Polin, MD). The third edition of the latter book was published in October 2013. He was a practicing neonatologist for more than 25 years, and served as Chief of Neonatology at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, and as Professor of Pediatrics at Stony Brook.
"What really sets Alan apart from other doctors and researchers are his experiences on the other side of the isolette and his realization that the preemie parent journey is an incredibly frightening one," Mr. Hall said. "We are supremely grateful for this opportunity to say thank you to Dr. Spitzer on behalf of parents of preemies everywhere – most of whom will never know the positive impact he has had on their journeys."
