White House Announces NACCE to Initiate Lean Curriculum Pilot Program
The White House’s Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) announced at its Demo Day that The National Association of Community Colleges for Entrepreneurship (NACCE), the nation’s leading organization focused on promoting entrepreneurship through community colleges, will initiate a Rapid Curriculum Development pilot in partnership with MassChallenge, the world’s largest startup accelerator, as well as Massachusetts’ Quinsigamond and Bunker Hill Community Colleges.

The White House’s Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) announced at its Demo Day that The National Association of Community Colleges for Entrepreneurship (NACCE) will launch a lean curriculum pilot program this fall. NACCE, the nation’s leading organization focused on promoting entrepreneurship through community colleges, will initiate a Rapid Curriculum Development pilot in partnership with MassChallenge, the world’s largest startup accelerator, as well as Massachusetts’ Quinsigamond and Bunker Hill Community Colleges. The model, developed with lean startup principles, will provide an innovative blueprint for community colleges to engage with industry to foster innovation, develop certificate programs that close the skills gap, and place students in jobs.
The announcement of the Rapid Curriculum is in line with the Administration’s initiatives to build American skills through community colleges. As part of the Rapid Curriculum Development program, NACCE will create and distribute a national best practices template for quickly developing curriculum with industry partners using Lean Startup methods to meet unfilled job training needs of employers. “We know from our 300 community college members that there are challenges on campus with increasing enrollment and completion rates,” said Rebecca Corbin, President and CEO of NACCE. “Partnering with industry to close the skills gap and fill vacancies is one innovative solution to create a win-win-win for industry, community colleges and most importantly students. NACCE is uniquely qualified to bring together its member colleges with industry leaders and start up organizations to find a solution.” NACCE will highlight the initial results from the pilot program at its annual conference in Houston, October 11-13th.
Demo Day
On August 4, President Obama hosted the first White House Demo Day, which celebrated the importance of entrepreneurship in America’s economy. The Demo Day event showcased why more entrepreneurs from all walks of life need the chance to turn their ideas into indispensable products and services. It also included new announcements that support inclusive entrepreneurship, including NACCE’s pilot program.
Jobs for Skilled Employees
Over half of the five million jobs open today are in information technology fields such as software development, network administration and cyber-security. These jobs were not in the marketplace ten years ago. MassChallenge has served over 617 startups who have created over 5,000 jobs. MassChallenge Founder and CEO, John Harthorne, stated, “Our startups need skilled employees who have fundamental IT and advanced manufacturing skills, but can also adapt as new technology develops. Partnering with community colleges to up-skill students helps us fuel our talent pipeline in the region.”
Community colleges have long been the backbone of workforce development. In the last ten years, they have become a hub in the entrepreneurial ecosystem. Both Bunker Hill and Quinsigamond Community Colleges have been working locally to close the skills gap. According to Gail E. Carberry, Ed.D., president of Quinsigamond Community College, “This pilot program with industry and an accelerator presents the opportunity to equip employees with 21st Century Skills such as an entrepreneurial mindset and launch independent contractors into lucrative fields. This is how we build the bridge of providing qualified workers for industry and college students with careers.”
