STEM-Based Weather Balloon Competition Announced for Washoe County School District
Glass Ceiling, developed by TigerWare Developments, challenges Washoe County High School students to touch the edge of space in a STEM-based competition using High Altitude Weather Balloons.
Reno, NV, August 18, 2015 --(PR.com)-- Glass Ceiling is a STEM-based high altitude Weather Balloon competition developed by TigerWare Developments for Washoe County School District high schools. Each eligible (11 eligible Comprehensive High Schools) High School may appoint one or more faculty advisors for a single team representing that High School.
Each team will design and construct a payload package according to standards and regulations that contains an “Avionics Package” that is provided and integrates a standardized GoPro compatible camera mount. Payload packages will have a NWL (Net Weight Limit) of 1,715 grams (3.78 lbs) that does not include the weight of the camera, avionics package, coin package and Auxiliary Package. Additional experiments may be added into the payload package, providing that they do not violate standards and regulations – which may result in disqualification. Each participating student and faculty advisor will put their initials on a penny, and their high schools initials on a quarter, which will be included in the payload package (exempt from NWL).
Payload packages will be launched individually by each school with support from program coordinators. Launch days occur on Tuesday & Thursday from 02/09/2016 - 03/17/2016, with 6 alternative launch days on Wednesday in between. The Auxiliary Package is a tracking device for a launch drone camera to record video of the 15 minutes leading up to launch and the first 5 minutes of launch. This package may not be used for competitive launches, depending on how drone responds to climb speed and altitude. Payload packages will be retrieved and cataloged by program coordinators “Chase Team,” have flight data and video copied, and then returned to the school for Student Data Analysis (Avionics Packages and Coin Packages will not be returned). Student Data Analysis reports will be due for each school on the Friday two weeks following their launch.
The Judge panel will review flight data and video for all teams and determine a grand prize winner based on specific criteria relating to the flight. This criterion includes: max altitude, flight stability, flight time, travel distance, landing estimate accuracy, and additional parameters which take into consideration the results of additional experiments included in flight, as well as quality of Student Data Analysis.
An Awards Banquet will be held on Earth Day, April 20th 2016, in which the High School team that won the grand prize is announced. The grand prize will be split between the winning schools Math and Science departments. Each team will receive a participation trophy or plaque, with additional awards for: most stable flight, best video, most creative design, most effective design and more.
