TGRA (http://www.tgra.org) is a Texas non-profit corporation dedicated to elevating the image of women and men in the field of rodeo. Our purposes are to promote and stage an annual rodeo in Texas and to encourage the participation of its members in western-related events and to engage in charitable activities. As a founding member of the International Gay Rodeo Association (http://www.igra.com) – IGRA, we are proud of our twenty-year history of gay rodeos and of our record of donating more than $2,000,000 to Texas charities.
The rules on the gay rodeo circuit were standardized 1982, keeping the gay cowboys and cowgirls on almost the same level as their straight counterparts. Traditional rodeo events still make up the majority of the rodeo with roping events in which contestants are on foot or on horseback to lasso moving steers, or a team of two riders rope steers by the horns and haunches. A rodeo spectator would also find traditional speed events, such as barrel racing, flag racing and pole bending. And what would a rodeo be without the traditional and dangerous rough-stock events: steer, bronc and bull riding that put the athlete in direct competition with the animal to see who will come out on top.
Gay rodeos also include camp events, which is where things get a little out of the ordinary and colorful. Spectators will see cowboys and cowgirls steer decorating, a partner event in which one cowboy ties a ribbon to a steer's tail while another removes a rope from its horns. The wild drag race, (no this doesn’t involve a race car), a threesome event requiring a man and a woman to drag a steer across a line 70 feet from the chutes and someone dressed in drag must mount it and ride across a dirt finish line. Last but not least there's goat dressing, a team of two partners capture a tethered goat to put a pair of jockey-style underwear onto it and then run for the finish line.
Gay rodeo began in 1976 in Reno, Nevada and inspired what has become the International Gay Rodeo Association. Did you say Gay Rodeo?! Who would have ever put those two words together in the same statement? Only one man In 1976: the Imperial Court Emperor of Reno, Nevada - Phil Ragsdale. The very first gay rodeo in America was to raise money for the Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon for Muscular Dystrophy. Regional gay rodeos are now produced every year throughout North America. Within the last few years these rodeos have gained the attention of a large television audience. For many, this television coverage will be their introduction to the sport in which men and women compete in every event, and in the gender with which they self-identify. Additionally, viewers will get to experience much of the color and character that makes gay rodeo such an enjoyable activity for the thousands of people that follow the series throughout the year.
