American Academy of Neurology and Tourette Association of America Offer New Clinical Research Training Fellowship

Bayside, NY, August 27, 2015 --(PR.com)-- The American Academy of Neurology (AAN) and the Tourette Association of America have announced a new Clinical Research Training Fellowship for 2016.

This is the AAN’s first collaboration with the Tourette Association of America, and the Clinical Research Training Fellowship in Tourette Syndrome is also the AAN’s first fellowship specifically focused on Tourette syndrome and related disorders. The partnering organizations will commit $55,000 per year for two years, plus $10,000 per year for tuition to support formal education in clinical research methodology at the applicant’s institution or elsewhere. The recipient will be announced at the 2016 AAN Annual Meeting in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

“In my roles with the AAN and the Tourette Association of America, I observed a mutual interest in supporting the careers of young researchers,” said Jonathan W. Mink, MD, PhD, a Fellow member of the AAN, a co-chair of the Tourette Association of America Scientific Advisory Board and facilitator for the development of the new fellowship grant.

The Clinical Research Training Fellowship Program of the American Academy of Neurology is focused on the need to recruit and train clinical researchers in neurology. Scientific and medical communities have called the shortage of investigators a crisis that will impact far more than the 50 million Americans currently affected by a neurologic disease. Recognizing this critical need for neurology research, the AAN has dedicated its grant-making efforts toward investing in young researchers. Federal funding for neurologic research has remained the same for the last four years and competition for funds from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has intensified.

“This new fellowship will enable both organizations to help support the careers of individuals passionate about research in Tourette syndrome,” added Mink. AAN fellowships are the first step to a broader base of support, and AAN fellowship recipients have gone on to receive NIH funding at record levels.
