Old Magnolia Soulangeana Tree Slated to be Moved
Tree Transplantation Company Prepares for Delicate Operation to Move Very Old Tree.

Big Trees is in discussions to transplant a very old Magnolia Soulangeana tree in a lakefront community. The tree is on the border between two properties owned by the same family currently, and it will need to be moved before the new construction project can begin. The tree would be carefully taken from its current site, and then an equally careful tree installation project would need to occur to bring the tree to a safe place to continue to grow.
The Magnolia was likely planted at the same time the properties in this community were developed, back in the early 60’s. The Magnolia is over 25’ tall, 25’ wide, and has a 16” base trunk diameter. It sits on the very border of the two properties, and the owner has stated they are afraid that if they eventually sell off one parcel, the new owners might take issue with this beautiful tree. The tree is estimated to weigh around 20-30,000 pounds, or a potential of 15 tons. A large crane will need to be accommodated into the backyard during the construction planning to be able to handle this weight, as there are no good ground-based pieces of equipment to handle this kind of weight carefully and effectively. The tree will then be moved to a more central location on the property.
Big Trees Project Manager Todd Holmes, stated: “The owners’ hopes are to have this tree properly dug and moved to the central area of the backyard of the property they mean to retain. The house designs are going to be tailored to anticipate the large Magnolia’s new location. When these trees are in full bloom, there is nothing else quite like them, and this is where the owners’ reverence of the tree has come from.”
