The Gateway Family YMCA Shines Light on Literacy during Read Across the Globe Event
Read Across the Globe is a one-day reading event that aims to raise awareness of the worldwide literacy crisis.
Rahway, NJ, October 09, 2015 --(PR.com)-- On Monday, October 19, The Gateway Family YMCA will host reading events across Eastern Union County and Northern Middlesex County in support of Read Across the Globe, an initiative that brings the power of volunteers together to impact literacy in our communities.
Read Across the Globe is a one-day reading event that aims to raise awareness of the worldwide literacy crisis. Working with volunteers, educators and partners in every time zone, the Y and other participating organizations will read to children around the globe to shine a light on literacy. Read Across the Globe is an initiative created by Points of Light, the world’s largest organization dedicated to volunteer service.
During the event, The Gateway Family YMCA will read to hundreds of children from our community. The Y, as a leader in youth development and social responsibility, understands that literacy is the key to a bright future. The Gateway Family YMCA supports literacy through integrated options within Early Learning Readiness, Child Care, Preschool, School Age Child Care, Summer Day Camp and Vacation Day programs.
“The Gateway Family YMCA is proud to support and participate in Read Across the Globe,” said Krystal R. Canady, CEO. “As a volunteer-driven organization committed to strengthening our community, we are invested in developing youth from cradle to career and learning to read proficiently is a key component of success in school and in life,” added Melynda A. Mileski, EVP/COO, The Gateway Family YMCA.
Children’s exposure to language—talking, singing, or reading—from infancy to age 3 is a strong predictor of their ability to read fluently by 3rd grade. Children who are not reading proficiently by 3rd grade are four times more likely to drop out of high school.
The Gateway Family YMCA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, health and community service organization of caring staff and volunteers dedicated to strengthening the foundations of community and stands For Youth Development, For Healthy Living and For Social Responsibility. The Gateway Family YMCA impacts the community by providing quality services to people of all ages, races, faith or incomes. The Y doesn’t just strengthen bodies – it strengthens people, families and communities.
