Patient Engagement Infographic: Portals, EHRs Elevate Satisfaction, Quality and Care Plan Adherence

A new infographic from the Healthcare Intelligence Network highlights tools and tactics helping healthcare organizations to boost patient engagement and some challenges of encouraging individuals to invest in self-care.

Sea Girt, NJ, October 23, 2015 --(PR.com)-- Almost two-thirds of healthcare organizations use patient portals as a communications tool to educate and engage individuals in care self-management. This benchmark is among the key metrics presented in "Patient Engagement Tactics to Drive Satisfaction, Care Plan Adherence and Quality," a new infographic from the Healthcare Intelligence Network.

When asked which tools they use to engage patients, healthcare organizations responded as follows:

- Electronic health records and personal health records (EHRs and PHRs): 48 percent

- Auto reminders: 36 percent

- Remote monitoring: 34 percent

- Smartphone apps: 26 percent

- Pre-visit check-in: 24 percent

- Virtual visits: 19 percent

The infographic also documents the prevalence of formal patient engagement programs (79 percent) and most challenging population to engage (53 percent indicated individuals with a behavioral health diagnosis). In other benchmarks, 20 percent said low health literacy is the chief barrier to patient engagement.

Quote Attributable to Melanie Matthews, HIN Executive VP and COO:

"The current thinking is that engaged patients not only are healthier and more likely to report a positive overall experience but also may incur fewer costs than the non-engaged. To this end, CMS and private payors include patient engagement as a critical quality marker. As this infographic demonstrates, there are numerous tools already in use in the provider environment that can impact patient engagement quotients."
