Saddleback Memorial Medical Center Honored with Five-Star Recognition in National Study
The Healthgrades Study of Patient Outcomes in Nearly 4,500 Hospitals Finds Saddleback Memorial Among the Best Nationally.
Laguna Hills, CA, October 29, 2015 --(PR.com)-- Saddleback Memorial Medical Center has been recognized by Healthgrades with its top five-star rating for a multitude of hospital centers of excellence including cardiac care, critical care, orthopedics, pulmonary care, and gastrointestinal care. Healthgrades, the leading online resource helping consumers make informed decisions about selecting healthcare providers, evaluated nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide for 33 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions and identified best-performing hospitals across all conditions or procedures within these service lines.
Saddleback Memorial’s achievements are part of findings released online and in the Healthgrades 2016 Report to the Nation. The new report demonstrates how clinical performance continues to differ dramatically between hospitals both nationally and regionally. This variation in care may have a significant impact on patient health outcomes.
“The Healthgrades recognition of Saddleback Memorial is a direct result of the organization’s strategic and systematic approach to constantly improving the quality and outcomes of patient care,” said Daniel La Mont, MD, cardiologist and Saddleback Memorial Chief of Staff. “It takes teamwork, constant communication, and a sincere dedication to diligently working to improve the patient care experience – that’s our mission and we do it well.”
This has been an award-winning year for Saddleback Memorial. Earlier in the year, Saddleback Memorial was named one of Healthgrades 2015 America’s 50 Best Hospitals. Only 1 percent of U.S. hospitals achieve this honor reflecting consistent, sustained clinical performance and superior patient outcomes.
“Healthgrades’ recognition is a tribute to our 3,400 physicians, employees, volunteers, and thousands of dedicated donors and supporters, who dedicate themselves to providing exceptional care to those in our community every day,” said Steve Geidt, Saddleback Memorial Chief Executive Officer. “This recognition supports my view that we have one of the finest medical teams in the nation.”
Within their centers of excellence, Saddleback Memorial was awarded five stars for these specific treatments and procedures:
- Treatment of Heart Failure for 9 Years in a Row (2008-2016)
- Treatment of Heart Attack for 7 Years in a Row (2010-2016)
- Coronary Interventional Procedures in 2016
- Total Knee Replacement for 4 Years in a Row (2013-2016)
- Hip Fracture Treatment for 3 Years in a Row (2014-2016)
- Treatment of Pneumonia for 12 Years in a Row (2005-2016)
- Treatment of GI Bleed for 8 Years in a Row (2009-2016)
- Colorectal Surgeries for 6 Years in a Row (2011-2016)
- Treatment of Sepsis for 11 Years in a Row (2006-2016)
- Treatment of Diabetic Emergencies for 2 Years in a Row (2015-2016)
To explain the significance of the Healthgrades star ratings, Healthgrades provided this example for the treatment of heart attacks: “From 2011-2013, patients treated for heart attack in hospitals with 5-stars for in-hospital mortality, have, on average a 49.0% lower risk of dying than if they were treated in hospitals with 1-star for in-hospital mortality. Similarly, patients treated for heart attack in hospitals with 1-star for in-hospital mortality are, on average, 2.0 times more likely to die than if they were treated in hospitals with 5-stars for in-hospital mortality.”*
“The Healthgrades 2016 Report to the Nation reveals striking disparities in quality at the local level, and underscores why it is vital for consumers to understand outcomes performance at alternative hospitals for specific conditions and procedures,” said Evan Marks, Chief Strategy Officer for Healthgrades. “Hospitals like Saddleback Memorial that have achieved the Healthgrades distinction have demonstrated a commitment to exceptional quality care.”
About the Healthgrades 2016 Report
For its analysis, Healthgrades evaluated approximately 40 million Medicare inpatient records for nearly 4,500 short-term acute care hospitals nationwide, and assessed hospital performance relative to each of 33 common conditions and procedures. Healthgrades recognizes a hospital’s quality achievements for cohort-specific performance, specialty area performance, and overall clinical quality. Individual procedure or condition cohorts are designated as 5 star (statistically significantly better than expected), 3 star (not statistically different from expected), and 1 star (statistically - significantly worse than expected) categories. The complete Healthgrades 2016 Report to the Nation with detailed cohort-specific outcomes data, hospital-specific quality achievements, and detailed study methodology, can be found at www.healthgrades.com/quality.
