Dejavu Gallery and Antecedent Projects proudly present The Subtle Image, a survey of contemporary artists whose figurative works evoke subtle expressions of the subconscious mind and spirituality. This exhibit was created in response to Dejavu’s legacy as the site of the mid-century Bodley Gallery, renowned for exhibiting pivotal artists such as surrealist Max Ernst along with early figurative works by artist Andy Warhol. The Subtle Image expands on Surrealism’s exploration of the subconscious and Warhol’s emphasis on the human image. Works on view will center on syncretizing spiritual energy with subconscious desires, privileging a holistic vision of human experience over the fragmented view of psychoanalysis. Taking cues from the color palette of Matisse and the psychic energy of German Expressionism, works by these twelve diverse artists encompass painting, collage, and drawing. The Subtle Image is a rich and nuanced journey into work by artists who are making waves in contemporary art through the lens of spirituality and the supernatural.
The Subtle Image is launching a revitalized Dejavu Gallery, incorporating the history of the Bodley Gallery and embracing the ethos of a tastemaking gallery focused on cultivating sophisticated contemporary art. Antecedent Projects is proud to partner with Dejavu to honor the legacy of the site as a formative modern art gallery.
