Boulder, CO, November 05, 2015 --(PR.com)-- Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica, Inc. (BIVI), makers of Prascend® (pergolide mesylate), and EquiManagement magazine are pleased to announce the second Champion of the Cause Award winner, Claudia Cary Davidson, an equine veterinary technician at Fowlerville Veterinary Clinic in Fowlerville, Michigan. Davidson was nominated by Dean Gibbons, DVM.
Davidson will receive an expense-paid trip to the 2015 American Association of Equine Veterinary Technicians and Assistants (AAEVT)/American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada, a one-year membership to the AAEVT and a plaque commemorating her win.
The Champion of the Cause Award program was launched in mid-2015. BIVI, teamed up with EquiManagement and the AAEVT to recognize hard-working and often-unheralded equine veterinary technicians and assistants and their importance to the well-being of horses.
“Veterinary technicians and assistants are often the first ones seeing some of the more subtle signs of disease,” said Dr. John Tuttle, senior associate director for Equine Professional Services for BIVI. “We want to reward those veterinary technicians and assistants, like Claudia, who are innovative in their thinking regarding equine health.”
The Champion of the Cause Award program will continue in 2016 as an annual recognition of the important role veterinary technicians play in they every day health of horses.
About the Winner
Davidson, who graduated from the veterinary technician program at Michigan State University nearly 30 years ago, is the coordinator of the equine and farm animal department at Fowlerville Vet Clinic. She manages the daily schedule for six veterinarians, including farm calls, herd checks, blood work, health papers, drug inventory and client education. She is also actively involved in the industry outside of her daily work at the clinic.
Davidson said she was a typical horse-crazy child, and after high school she started riding dressage with a professional trainer. “I decided I was going to need an education to support the horses,” said Davidson. “Getting accepted at MSU for the vet tech program has allowed me to support myself and my horses, and introduced me to Standardbreds.”
She is an active leader in the 4-H Standardbred program, designed to educate youth and their families about Standardbred horses and the racing industry. Davidson is also a board member of the Fowlerville Fair and the Michigan trail group Friends of Lakeland Trails, and is involved in legislative committees with the Michigan Equine Partnership and Michigan Harness Horsemen Association.
Davidson said the best part of her job is helping the “horse owners become better caretakers and the horses to become better athletes.” She feels that client education is very important to the horse because better owners make better and healthier horses. Davidson said she also would like to learn more about managing the business of equine veterinary practice and acupuncture.
