L. Ron Hubbard’s Fantastical Tale—"Typewriter in the Sky"—Celebrates Its 75th Anniversary
Hollywood, CA, November 12, 2015 --(PR.com)-- Celebrating its 75th anniversary this month, "Typewriter in the Sky" by L. Ron Hubbard has been hailed as a creative milestone in the history of fantasy as well as pioneering application of "virtual reality" to the storytelling art.

The top all-time award winner for short fiction, Mike Resnick, noted, "'Typewriter in the Sky' is one of the first, if not -the- first, examples of what has come to be known as recursive science fiction*. More to the point, of all the dozens of books and millions of words L. Ron Hubbard wrote, ‘Typewriter’ remains my favorite.”

* Recursive science fiction, a sub-genre of science fiction about science fiction.

New York Times bestselling science fiction author Kevin J. Anderson sees the novel as simply "a true masterpiece of the genre." While adventure novelist Clive Cussler hails the novel as, "An adventure story written in the great style adventures should be written in." And William J. Widder in his "The Fiction of L. Ron Hubbard" refers to this "journey into the mind" as his most celebrated and influential fantasy.

So whether viewed as science fiction, adventure or fantasy, Hubbard’s literary contribution can be summed up as "his most permanently memorable work," as noted by critic and author John Clute.

In the years since its publishing, both Woody Allen’s "The Purple Rose of Cairo" (Harlan Ellison (1989). Harlan Ellison's Watching. Underwood-Miller. p. 346.) and Marc Forster’s "Stranger Than Fiction" have been compared to "Typewriter in the Sky." (Gary Westfahl (November 13, 2006). "Dying is Hard, Comedy is Easy: A Review of Stranger Than Fiction." Locus Online)

"Typewriter in the Sky" is a story is about Mike de Wolf, a piano player, who suddenly finds himself part of an adventure novel being written by his friend Horace Hackett. Not only is he in the novel, but he is the villain and destined to die. Plotting desperately to save himself, de Wolf hears the sounds of a typewriter in the sky each time the action takes on a new direction and he tries to survive Horace’s poorly researched plot.
